Job Description
Description of Duties:

  1. Directly lobby the legislature and actively engage with State departments and other governmental entities and agencies to advance the interest of Illinois Nurses (INA) Association and members. Government relations activity includes all policy areas related to INA. Maintain consistent INA messaging, while implementing details of legislative strategy.
  2. Proactively assist in government relations short-term strategic planning and agenda development, including recommending rapid strategic changes as needed. Monitor and review key state and federal legislation, rules, notices of hearings and other political developments relevant to INA and its members.
  3. As needed, assist with INA Lobby Day, under the direction of INA and assistance from other staff.
  4. Research proposed legislation, rules or programs.
  5. Providing daily, weekly and full session reports of government relations activity to INA leadership and members. Work with communications team in providing timely updates.
  6. Draft legislation, legislative testimony, correspondence and other documents as needed.
  7. Actively participate in development and refinement of the INA Legislative Platform to help guide the government relations function of INA.
  8. Liaison to INA’s Political Action Committee.
  9. Assist INA in lobbying compliance with governmental regulation.
  10. Provide assistance in broader communications function, including social media, website and other communications tools and strategies
  11. Regularly meet with INA members and prospective members to determine legislative and regulatory needs.
  12. Support other membership activities, including sector committee meetings, conferences and events.
  13. Attend board committee meetings, statewide meetings, and member and affiliate member meetings, presenting reports as needed and appropriate.
  14. Establish and lead campaign plans to mobilize members for political action.
  15. This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Healthcare or related field.
  2. Demonstrated excellent public speaking skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a plan.
  4. Demonstrated superior verbal and writing skills.
  5. Knowledge of healthcare and healthcare trends.
  6. Knowledge of unions and the labor movement.
  7. Excellent time management and organizational skills.
