Assistant Executive Director

The Community Services Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO (CSA) is the non-profit (501 c 3) arm of the metro DC area’s labor council. It is part of the AFL-CIO Community Services Network, and is a campaign participant of United Way of the National Capital Area and Combined Federal Campaign. Its mission is to improve the lives of workers and their families by meeting their human and social services needs; by building broad and diverse coalitions to promote and protect dignity and justice for workers; and by empowering workers and their unions to make their communities better, more responsive places to live, work, raise a family and retire.

CSA operates a number of programs including an Emergency Assistance Fund, information and referral, lay-off and strike support activities, holiday basket program, and a construction pre-apprenticeship training and placement program for low-income area residents. As a non-profit agency, CSA also actively fundraises throughout the year.

The Assistant ED reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for assisting the ED to ensure the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. Duties include assisting the Executive Director with overall agency management and administration, agency communications, staff supervision and relations, budgeting and finance, program oversight, board relations, and fundraising.

CSA is seeking an energetic, creative, dedicated, experienced and committed individual to help existing staff continue successful programs and expand activities to advance the interests of workers, their families and their unions in the metro DC area.

Applicants MUST:

  • Have demonstrated experience with the labor movement
  • Have grant-writing and/or grants management experience
  • Have demonstrated excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Have demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Have experience working with boards of directors
  • Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Be qualified in the use of computer technology including databases and social media

Applicants SHOULD:

  • Enjoy working with clients, social services agencies and local unions and their members
  • Be willing to do a variety of activities required in the course of advancing the interests of CSA
  • Have some familiarity with workplace giving campaigns
  • Be able to travel around the metro Washington area as required
  • Be able to work with a diverse staff at both CSA and at the labor council and with its affiliated local unions and program clients
