POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
The University of Hawaii Professional Assembly (UHPA) represents all faculty in the University of Hawai‘i system across 10 campuses on Hawai‘i Island, Kaua’i, Maui, and O‘ahu. We are excited to offer the opportunity to engage with our membership and community allies by supporting our organizing, advocacy, and community building efforts as a Honolulu-based organizer.

This position is responsible for:

  • Organizing and mobilizing members to build power to advocate for issues involving higher education, their professions, and communities
  • Developing and/or executing a comprehensive strategy and plan to grow our membership across the entire system
  • Increasing member engagement across UHPA membership by:
    • Working with UHPA leadership to give them the skill sets and opportunities to effectively engage with members
    • Conducting one-on-one in-person visits, site visits, phone and web-based conversations, meetings, and other interactions with UHPA leadership and members
    • Developing and executing other innovative ways to engage members.
  • Attending regular meetings with supervisors and teams to discuss progress and plan next steps
  • Tracking and maintaining data, including assessments and other relevant data on a regular basis
  • Taking direction and incorporating feedback on work activities to accomplish goals

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS UPON START

  • At least three years of previous labor, student, and/or community organizing with a background in education strongly preferred
  • Dedication to UHPA’s values of transformational unionism
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; knowledgeable about strategies to dismantle institutionalized oppression; and ability to work effectively with diverse communities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • High emotional IQ and ability to build consensus from diverse viewpoints
  • Competency in computer/web functions, organizer databases, and social media platforms
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Ability to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from supervisors
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including early morning, nights, and weekends
  • Ability to commute to and from work sites throughout Hawai‘i with a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle
  • Willingness to travel frequently between islands and occasionally to the continental U.S.
  • Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional, and detail-oriented

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary range is negotiable based on experience. Benefits are comprehensive and competitive, including fully paid family health and dental benefits; 401(k) retirement benefits; paid leave, including vacation and sick days; travel and expense reimbursements.
