Associate Counsel
Legal Department

Based in the New York City, NY area

 

The New York State Nurses Association is a labor organization of over 40,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, nursing practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. We are New York's largest union and professional association for registered nurses.

This position will report to the Director of the Legal Department. The Associate Counsel represents NYSNA in a variety of administrative proceedings including arbitrations and NLRB matters. This position will research and provide legal advice as directed by senior NYSNA staff on contract enforcement, regulatory, statutory and legislative issues, collective bargaining negotiations, organizing campaigns, and other representational and union matters. This role will support strategic campaigns including review of campaign materials and strategic legal advice. Review vendor contracts and leases and revise as appropriate. Effectively communicate complicated legal concepts to members and staff through trainings and presentations. Some travel will be required.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Handle arbitrations and proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board and other administrative tribunals.
  • Manage all aspects of arbitration cases including the preparation of witnesses, the presentation of evidence and the drafting of post-hearing briefs when necessary.
  • Research and provide legal advice and representation in connection with regulatory, statutory and legislative issues, collective bargaining negotiations, organizing campaigns and other representational and union matters.
  • Review leases, vendor contracts and other commercial agreements and edit as appropriate.
  • Review and approve legally sensitive communications and advertising.
  • Provide strategic legal advice for NYSNA campaigns and events related to these campaigns, which include providing legal support at informational pickets, job actions, internal organizational conventions and other events.
  • Participate in orientation and education programs for members, elected leaders and staff, as appropriate and necessary.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all NYSNA programs/activities and their interrelationships.
  • Travel within New York State and perform evening work when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • All candidates must possess a juris doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Valid license to practice law in New York State
  • Two years of legal experience, preferably in labor law and practice.
  • Candidates should be experienced in preparing and litigating legal claims through arbitrations, administrative hearings, and/or trials.
  • Candidates must have a demonstrated interest in social justice or worker’s rights

Salary Range: $110,000 – $130,000, depending upon relevant experience.
