Assistant Director
Department of Bargaining Strategies

Based out of our Solidarity House in Detroit, MI

 

The UAW has taken an all-new approach to bargaining and striking. During our most recent negotiations with Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, our union ran a contract campaign for the first time, initiated strikes against all three companies at the same time and brought a whole new level of transparency to bargaining. The result was record-breaking contracts.

Our union has created a new Department of Bargaining Strategies to build on our success and expand the model used in Big Three bargaining to all areas of our union. The UAW is seeking an experienced candidate with a history of successfully planning and leading contract campaigns, utilizing high-participation approaches to bargaining, and using offensive bargaining techniques to support the Director of Bargaining Strategy in overseeing the creation and direction of this new department.

Candidates should have experience at leading and developing both contract campaign and bargaining strategies, mentoring and coaching bargaining teams, and providing workers with the skills and resources they need to overcome fierce opposition from employers.

Candidates should have a demonstrated history of exercising good strategic leadership and providing metric-based reports. Candidates must be willing to work long and irregular hours and to travel as needed with overnight stays.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Bargaining Strategies to align staff work with departmental and campaign goals.
  • Work with the Director of Bargaining Strategies to enact departmental and campaign plans with clear benchmarks.
  • Supervise, train, coach, and direct staff.
  • Be able to effectively and independently lead teams and oversee staff.
  • Guide staff in how to quickly assess and make strategic pivots in complex situations.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Director of Bargaining Strategies.
  • Make recommendations to the Director of Bargaining Strategies regarding staff development, retention, discipline, dismissal and promotion.
  • Be able to effectively liaison with union leaders, departmental staff, and local bargaining teams.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Three years minimum experience leading contract campaigns, bargaining, and strikes.
  • High proficiency in developing strategic plans and communicating them to staff and union leaders.
  • Aptitude for developing staff and fostering strong teams.
  • Strong familiarity with labor law.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities is a necessity.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • An unwavering commitment to building a fighting, member-led union.

Salary and Benefits
This is a full time, exempt position based in Detroit, Michigan. The UAW offers a salary of $136,004, along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits. Relocation may be available.
