Lead Organizer

Based in Upstate NY

We are a seeking experienced Organizers or Lead Organizers to work on aggressive campaigns in higher education. As a Lead Organizer, your role is to lead and win comprehensive campaigns—supporting workers who are fighting to win power by building a Union in their workplace.

Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):

  • Coordinate and lead an organizing campaign, including leading workers, staff, and the various components of a comprehensive campaign.
  • Coordinate organizing staff including scheduling, assigning turf, debriefing and training.
  • Develop and implement regular training and role play for staff and worker leaders on the campaign to further develop skills and understanding of the campaign.
  • Provide regular feedback to organizers on their performance while on the campaign.
  • Oversee management of the campaign data base, list and cards.
  • Identify and develop worker leaders to guide and lead their campaign.
  • Motivate and inspire workers to build their Union in the face of heavy –and often illegal– employer opposition.
  • Utilize house visits and phone calls to identify workers interested in forming a Union.
  • Conduct individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns.
  • Motivate individual workers and groups of workers to take collective action.
  • Involve community allies in organizing campaigns.
  • Conduct research needed to build a comprehensive campaign.

Previous experience in Union or community organizing is desirable. A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to both lead a large campaign with a team of organizers and a smaller campaign yourself – via building one-on-one relationships with workers, and educating them about building Union power.
  • Must be able to act and organize time with independence.
  • Must be able to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
  • Preference that you have led and won at least one union campaign with a boss fight.
  • Excellent communicator – ability to actively listen.
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and train staff and worker leaders in the skills needed for the campaign.
  • Ability to write and proofread campaign communications materials.
  • Willingness to work long hours, nights, and weekends.
  • Capacity to work independently and also to lead a team.
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan.
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A car and a valid driver’s license are required.

Location:
We are based in Syracuse NY, and seeking a qualified candidate based in Upstate NY. The position will require travel within the area.

Compensation:
Salary range from $61,000—63,500 depending on experience. Full benefits package including 100% employer-paid family health/dental/vision insurance (currently $22k per year), a retirement plan contribution (currently 21% of salary), and a $500 per month car allowance.
