Internal Organizers and Lead Organizers

The Western States Regional Joint Board of Workers United-SEIU is a growing, progressive union of 10,000 workers at warehouses, industrial laundries, and other jobs in California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Job Titles: Internal Organizer, Lead Organizer
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Language: Bilingual (Spanish & English) is required

These positions will be based in Los Angeles, CA and will be responsible for organizing with warehouse workers, recruiting and developing strong leaders and building an organized, militant membership capable of fighting for justice and winning power in their workplaces, industries, and communities. Additionally, you will work to build workers’ political power by identifying opportunities for members to take political action and action in their communities, mobilizing members to those activities, and representing the union at various political and community organizations, campaigns, and coalitions.

Responsibilities for both Internal Organizers and Lead Organizers include:

  • Recruit, train, and develop members as shop stewards and activists, and support them taking action at work and in politics.
  • Build member committees capable of resolving workplace problems and mobilizing co-workers to action.
  • Lead members into action in politics and in their communities, in partnership with other progressive organizations and community groups.
  • Represent the union in various coalitions and campaigns.
  • Meet and communicate with members by conducting workplace visits and house calls.
  • Investigate and resolve grievances while training members to do the same.
  • Create and carry out internal organizing plans for multiple workplaces, with guidance from the Division Director.
  • Promptly return phone calls from members.
  • Maintain updated membership information in a computer database.
  • Assist with external organizing campaigns as needed.

Driving, travel, and irregular/extended hours.

Qualifications for both Internal Organizers and Lead Organizers include:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Union Organizer, Union Rep, and/or Union Political Organizer — ideally 5 years or more as a Union Organizer, Union Rep, and/or Union Political Organizer — including making house calls, recruiting leaders, building committees, and/or handling grievances.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire working people to action.
  • Basic knowledge of labor law and union organizing principles.
  • Comfortable using computers to update membership databases, create leaflets, correspond with e-mail, and scanning documents.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and car required.

Additional Responsibilities and Qualifications for Lead Organizers include:

  • Supervises & trains a team of organizing staff and member organizers, develops work plans and skills development plans for the organizing team, assists organizers with resolving workplace issues and grievances, and develops and executes campaign tactics together with the Division Director.
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a Union Organizer/Representative.

Language: Bilingual Spanish & English is required.

Compensation: Salary range for Internal Organizers is $68,900 - $71,700 and for Lead Organizers is $73,700 - $75,200, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include $700 monthly car allowance in addition to reimbursement of gas and car insurance; phone reimbursement; fully employer-paid family health, dental, and vision insurance; a generous paid time off package; fully employer-paid pension retirement plan; life insurance; and other benefits outlined in a staff union contract.
