The AFL-CIO Safety and Health Department advocates and works for stronger worker safety and health protections and worker rights primarily through federal and state regulatory and legislative activities. The department plays a leadership role in the safety and health community in the development of safety and health policies and initiatives. It has a small staff, broad responsibilities and is involved in a wide range of safety and health issues and initiatives with unions, labor bodies, allied activist groups and academic, public health and medical experts.

  • This is a permanent, full-time position in the staff bargaining unit.
  • This position reports directly to the Director of Safety and Health.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Assist the Safety and Health Director and staff with researching and writing comments on proposed safety and health regulations and legislation;
  • Respond to requests for information on safety and health issues;
  • Monitor developments on safety and health issues and create communication and advocacy materials;
  • Conduct research and write reports on safety and health issues. Serves as the primary researcher/author on the annual AFL-CIO report- “Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect- A National and State-by-State Profile of Worker Safety and Health in the United States.” Prepare fact sheets, talking points and other educational and advocacy materials for distribution to the labor movement, the media and general public.
  • Assist with national planning and organization of the annual Workers Memorial Day resources and activities;
  • Promote and advance the safety and health priorities and programs of the national AFL-CIO and state and local labor bodies and its 60 union affiliates through policy and direct support;
  • Support the Safety and Health department’s initiatives and programs through research, writing, editing, analysis, logistical support, and creative approaches as needed; and
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong writer and communicator with a deep commitment to and interest in workplace safety and health issues and worker rights;
  • Advanced degree in safety and health or public health (e.g. industrial hygiene, epidemiology, toxicology) or other discipline relevant to safety and health strongly preferred; or an undergraduate degree in safety and health or related discipline with at least two years of safety and health work experience;
  • Previous experience with unions, safety and health coalitions, community organizations allied with labor or other labor-related organizations is a plus, but not a requirement;
  • Strong working knowledge, and experience with, web-based research, Microsoft Excel data analysis and Google Drive;
  • Well-organized with a strong attention to detail; and
  • Fresh perspectives and creative approaches are welcome;

Salary: $103,181.25
