$82,357-$123,530

This position is responsible for assisting the Political Action Department staff in developing and conducting political action campaigns for affiliates; training affiliate leaders/staff and members in how to conduct political campaigns; assisting in-house polling operations; and assisting with state lobbying efforts.

Duties:

  • Provides mobilization support for federal, state, and local elections, including candidate, legislative, issue and membership PAC fundraising campaigns.
  • Develops and manages field programs including, but not limited to, voter registration, member mobilization, voter contact and get-out-the-vote activities in assigned campaigns.
  • Assists with the development and execution of state and local legislative advocacy campaigns.
  • Develops campaign plans with appropriate goals and benchmarks.
  • Build solidarity amongst affiliates through regular joint table meetings, planning and program implementation.
  • Develops relationships and works with allies, including other labor unions, progressive groups, candidates, and parties to build progressive strength while representing AFSCME’s interests. Makes recommendations on electoral engagement, including participation with aligned groups and resource requests.
  • Assesses and tracks programs for AFSCME field operations, providing reports and analyzing data as required. Promotes and implements the membership PAC program and represents the department at various forums and functions.
  • Utilizes advanced targeting, data and research to enhance field programs. Conducts political training workshops in political motivation, campaign activities and member involvement to acquaint members with AFSCME’s position on political, legislative, and administrative issues and matters of importance.
  • Assesses candidates on federal, state, and local levels of government to determine candidate viability and recommend degree of union involvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in Labor Relations, Political Science or Government and a minimum of three (3) years of related work experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities.

Skills Requirements:

  • Ability to develop electoral campaign plans, including the understanding of campaign targeting and polling techniques.
  • Knowledge of federal campaign financial regulations and laws.
  • Knowledge of Votebuilder/VAN/LAN.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to assist in the development of training curriculum and conduct workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing in large group settings.
  • Ability to assess political situations and develop appropriate campaign strategies.
  • Experience with labor unions and an understanding of state and local legislative processes is preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently and in group settings.

Travel & Work hours

  • Travel and extended work hours including weekends are required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
