Bilingual Internal Organizer

Based in New York City, NY

 

The New York New Jersey Regional Joint Board, Workers United is a Union dedicated to internal shop leadership and new organizing in order to change an unequal economic system. We are currently seeking an Internal Organizer to work in a variety of industries side-by-side with worker leaders and developing leaders. This work will include shops with current contracts and shops that will be working to win their first contracts.

Bilingual Internal Organizer (Exempt)
This position reports to the Organizing Director, General Manager and Secretary Treasurer of the Union.

Purpose
To build Union leadership, develop and implement campaigns, increase activism and help workers win victories through militant shop-floor organizing and creative representation

The Work
The Internal Organizer will help build leadership and activism in the Union through an organizing approach to representational work. They will work with Union Representatives, Organizers and Committees within both unionized shops with contracts and unionized shops without contracts. Will be responsible for developing and assuring ongoing good function of member education and cross unit solidarity programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • In assigned shops, work with leaders on daily basis, assist leaders in addressing workplace issues, prepare for and lead collective bargaining;
  • In conjunction with leaders and Union reps in various shops, identifying workplace goals;
  • Working with shop leaders and Union Reps to create escalating action plans to achieve collective goals;
  • Moving identified leaders into active positions within the Union;
  • Build relationships with Organizing Committees in newly organized shops;
  • Help implement national and local strategies and tactics including bargaining and strikes within newly organized shops;
  • May be asked to work independently and in conjunction with workplace leaders in some shops to handle various issues that arise;
  • May be paired with Union Representatives to assist in preparing and participating in negotiations in shops other than their own.

Qualifications and Skills include:

  • At least 3 years of union organizing experience
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Has demonstrated ability to move workers to take actions
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment
  • Ability to lead and work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups
  • Ability and willingness to ask for help when needed
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in both Spanish and English
  • Basic computer skills, including Google Suite and email programs

Travel within the Tri-State area will be required. Some out of the area travel may on occasion be required to work on other campaigns or attend seminars or workshops.

Hours may be long and irregular. Weekend work will be required at times.

This position will focus on building the power of the Union through building the strongest worksite leadership systems possible in conjunction with both Reps and Organizers.

Starting salary is commensurate with experience and skill ranging from 75,000 to 85,000.
