The LA Black Worker Center (LABWC) seeks a Lead Community Organizer who is ready to build power with Black workers and make history while working with the first Black Worker Center in California, an emerging lead voice on Black work and economic justice.

Our mission works toward economic justice in low-income communities of color by building power amongst Black workers and their communities to expand access to quality employment and promoting policies for sustainable economic development in LA’s Black neighborhoods. To effectively address the needs of the Black unemployed and underemployed workforce the LABWC’s programmatic functions cover these areas: leadership development, political education, training (organizing), coalition building, advocacy, research and communication.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Community Organizer will work under the direction of the managing director to assist with developing campaign strategies and leading on shaping organizing plans that advance the vision, mission and goals of the LA BWC. The Lead Community Organizer will supervise and manage a 5+ organizing team to recruit new members; develop leaders and build committees; and mobilize members for direct action campaigns. The position also includes cultivating and maintaining relationships with key community organizations and elected officials.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise rigorous outreach and recruitment efforts and various external and internal organizing using the fundamental principles of organizing.
  • Prepare work organizing workplans, calendars, files, reports and other records.
  • Develops and campaign plans with the goals, strategies and tactics necessary to execute the plan, including effective management of staff, volunteer, and administrative resources.
  • Assess and trains leaders by implementing the LA BWC leadership ladder toward building democracy through member committees and various trainings and activities.
  • Build durable and strong relationship with members, activists and leaders
  • Visits workers at their job sites, in the community and in their homes and trains organizers and members in organizing.
  • Writes leaflets and other materials for campaigns.
  • Implements effective staff development and team building.
  • Lead coalition-building efforts with other unions, community based- organizations and students to support local and statewide campaign goals.
  • Manage lists, charts, and databases.
  • Meet strategic goals and deadlines and manage organizers success of meeting statewide goals and deadlines.
  • Supports workers’ efforts to get support on labor and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Works with Organizing Director to supervise activities, developments and progress of assigned campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Experienced organizer who knows the fundamental principles of organizing.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising multiple staff at various levels of experience.
  • Able to manage competing, assignments, projects, managing timelines, and effectively using database systems, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills: (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, hardworking and self-disciplined.
  • Ability to work well with a team and motivate others to take action.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting unemployed and underemployed Black workers, poor and working class communities, and of the Los Angeles labor movement a plus!
  • Strong commitment to racial justice, workers’ rights, and Black community empowerment.
  • Valid CA driver’s license and access to a car for work related travel.

COMPENSATION
Full-time position: Salary up to $50,000 per year depending on experience.
