HPAE Staff Attorney

Based in New Jersey

The Legal Department of Health Professionals & Allied Employees, AFT/AFL-CIO, is hiring a Staff Attorney. HPAE, affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, is New Jersey’s largest and fastest-growing health care union; our 13,000 members are nurses, professionals, clinicians, and ancillary staff in public and private sector hospitals, nursing homes, universities, home care, blood banks, and other health and education facilities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. HPAE is a progressive, democratic union whose goals are to advance the rights of all workers through organizing, collective bargaining, member engagement, and community and political action.

The Staff Attorney’s primary assignment will be representing the Union at all stages of contractual and disciplinary arbitration proceedings. The Staff Attorney will also, among other things, consult with Representation Department staff regarding higher-level grievance processing; and support judicial and administrative litigation in state and federal forums.

Qualifications include a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement, workers’ rights, and social justice; excellent research and writing skills, with law journal experience preferred; and the ability to work diligently and dynamically with and for our leaders and members. HPAE is an equal-opportunity employer. The Legal Department encourages applications from candidates with disabilities and those who are people of color, LGBTQI, veterans, and women.

A Juris Doctorate and eligibility for bar admission are required; however, HPAE will consider applications from candidates who are not currently barred in New Jersey or Pennsylvania or are not in active status.

HPAE has several offices throughout New Jersey and the Staff Attorney may be based at any of them. Case-related travel throughout the state and the Philadelphia area is required. Salary is commensurate with experience. The Staff Attorney position is represented by HPAE’s staff union and its terms are governed by a collective bargaining agreement, which provides generous benefits.
