Located on the Upper East Side, New York Professional Nurses Union (NYPNU) represents 1,300 Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and RN Case Managers in Manhattan-area hospitals. NYPNU was founded by nurses with the vision that nurses are best at advocating on their own behalf and are most effective at standing up for their patients. NYPNU’s elected leaders are all current or retired nurses, nurse practitioners, and case managers at the facilities NYPNU represents. When they negotiate the contract, they have to live with the results as employees working side-by-side with other NYPNU members. NYPNU has been, and continues to be, at the forefront of worker and patient advocacy. Most notably, NYPNU was one of the first unions in the country to win nurse-patient ratios in their contract. About the Senior Labor Relations Representative Position
The NYPNU Senior Labor Relations Representative (SLR Rep) is a senior staff leader. They report directly to the Executive Director and help oversee two other staff members in our “small but mighty” laid-back office setting. The SLR Rep administers and enforces the collective bargaining agreement, leads internal organizing initiatives, and supports communications with membership. The SLR Rep designs dynamic internal organizing campaigns with the input and direction of member leaders and implements the organizing plan with the assistance of other staff and members.

Responsibilities:

  • Enforce the collective bargaining agreement, including preparing for and presenting of third step grievances and attendance at arbitrations;
  • Prepare and help facilitate collective bargaining negotiations including drafting CBA proposals and developing contract campaigns and strike preparations;
  • Mobilize membership in support of grievances and/or bargaining demands as necessary;
  • Design and produce membership surveys, graphics, promotional materials, electronic newsletters, and blogs;
  • Generate digital media campaigns that engage our members and community supporters to take action;
  • Develop and implement internal organizing programming;
  • Manage and support staff on assignments and keeping deadlines;

Due to the schedules of our members, some evening/night and weekend work will be involved as needed.

The Ideal Candidate
We seek a seasoned Labor Representative who has demonstrated ability using strategic actions, membership engagement, and grievance procedures to enforce and strengthen our Collective Bargaining Agreement. The ideal candidate is more at home engaging membership at the worksite than sitting at a desk. They win grievances and campaigns by engaging the membership on issues, developing rank-and-file leadership, educating members on internal organizing tactics, and mobilizing members to fight against attacks on nurses and healthcare. They are able to quickly develop engaging, dynamic campaigns with detailed implementation designs. They are able to nimbly adjust plans to account for situational developments.

Ability to learn from constructive criticism and have good humored, lively debate around contract interpretation is important. Eagerness to participate in all levels of union administration and office management, from making your own copies to developing new organizational systems, is paramount. Familiarity with healthcare/hospital employee issues and workplaces is highly desired.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience required in representing workers, preferably in healthcare.
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Well-versed in the Google Suite and Microsoft Office; including advanced ability with Excel
  • Ability to design materials with Photoshop and/or Publisher and update WordPress website
  • Commitment to trade unionism
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Potent organizational skills
  • Deftness in handling multiple projects with many different factors and subjects at once
  • Capacity to switch from one task to the next quickly
  • Self-starter with the ability to complete work plans and report back on progress

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience organizing and representing workers in the healthcare sector
  • Advanced degree in labor relations or J.D.
  • Healthcare background
  • Familiarity with NGP/VAN

Compensation:

  • Salary: $70,000+ commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package including 401(k), health insurance, and 4 weeks of vacation
