Starting Salary: $90,000 – $125,000 per year, commensurate with experience and training

CASE is a member-driven public-sector union representing over 5,000 California attorneys, administrative law judges, hearing officers, and deputy labor commissioners across the state. Position Summary
We are seeking a strategic, creative, and mission-driven Communications Director to lead the union’s internal and external communications efforts. The Communications Director will help strengthen member engagement, support organizing and collective bargaining campaigns, build CASE’s public profile, develop compelling narratives about members, and advance the union’s legislative and political priorities.
The Communications Director leads CASE’s internal and external communications strategy, including member communications, media relations, digital communications, organizing communications and public affairs. This position works closely with the CASE President, Board of Directors, staff, and member leaders to build stories, strategies, and structures that engage members to achieve organizing, advocacy, and political objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Communications Director oversees CASE’s internal and external communications strategy and the day-to-day execution of our communications work.
- Develop and implement CASE’s communications strategy, including messaging, member communications, media relations, digital communications, public affairs, and communications for organizing, bargaining, legislative, and political campaigns.
- Support organizing and collective bargaining campaigns by developing member communications, campaign messaging, digital actions, public narratives, and communications strategies that build participation and member power.
- Shape CASE’s public narrative around state employees, public services, working people, and issues affecting California state government, while identifying opportunities to build CASE’s visibility and leadership.
- Manage CASE’s digital communications, including the website, email communications, social media, and other digital platforms.
- Develop communications materials and content, including speeches, talking points, presentations, legislative updates, videos, graphics, and other multimedia communications for CASE officers, staff, and members.
- Provides strategic communications advice to the CASE Board of Directors, staff, and member leaders, including on messaging, media strategy, and public relations.
- Build communications capacity among members and staff by developing and delivering communications, media, public speaking, and storytelling training and helping workplace leaders effectively communicate with coworkers, policymakers, the media, and the public.
- Coordinate communications with CASE organizers, member leaders, and external partners to ensure communications are integrated with organizing, bargaining, legislative, and political priorities, and ensure message alignment across platforms.
- Lead media relations and public communications, including developing relationships with reporters, coordinating media outreach, preparing press statements and op-eds, and identifying and training CASE members to serve as effective media spokespeople.
- Manage outside communications consultants and vendors, including pollsters, media firms, advertising agencies, web and graphic designers, videographers, and other communications professionals as needed.
- Establish goals and metrics for CASE communications, evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and programs, and adjust strategies based on results.
Qualifications
- B.A. degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, public relations, organizing, public affairs, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in communications, organizing, public relations, advocacy, political communications, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing strategic communications campaigns with measurable results.
- Excellent writing, editing, presentation, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and compellingly.
- Experience with media relations, digital communications, social media, and online engagement.
- Ability to translate organizational goals into effective communications strategies that engage people and motivate action.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to member-driven organizing, collective action, and union values.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a labor union, public-sector organization, nonprofit, advocacy organization, or other member-driven institution.
- Experience supporting organizing, collective bargaining, legislative, political, or workplace campaigns.
- Knowledge of California state government, public-sector employees, labor issues, or related public policy.
- Experience developing and delivering communications, media, or public speaking training for members, staff, or leaders.
- Experience with graphic design, video production, paid media, polling, or managing communications consultants and vendors.
