Starting Salary: $115,000 – $160,000

CASE is a member-driven public-sector union representing over 5,000 California attorneys, administrative law judges, hearing officers, and deputy labor commissioners across the state. Our members protect Californians where they work, live, and play, and proudly serve as the backbone of California’s democratic process.

Position Summary
We are searching for a dynamic, experienced organizer committed to building a powerful, high participation, and democratic union. The successful candidate will lead CASE’s organizing program, develop member leadership, expand participation, and drive strategic campaigns that build lasting power for more than 5,000 legal professionals serving Californians statewide.

Working under the direction of and in collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Director of Organizing will develop and execute CASE’s organizing strategy, strengthen workplace structures, and help create a culture of active member engagement, leadership, and collective action to represent our members and advocate for the rights of working people.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic planning, execution, and evaluation of organizing strategy and campaigns.
  • Develop, execute, and evaluate CASE’s statewide organizing strategy to build member power and win campaigns.
  • Design and lead organizing, contract, political, workplace, and issue campaigns that advance CASE’s strategic goals.
  • Lead statewide organizing plans, high-priority initiatives, and new organizing drives, including building organizing committees in every agency and department.
  • Develop and coordinate internal and external membership and leadership meetings that advance CASE’s organizing strategy and campaign goals.
  • Review internal and external communications to execute consistency with organizing strategy and campaigns.
  • Establish goals, metrics, and systems to measure growth in member engagement, leadership, and collective power.
  • Collaborate closely with board, staff, local reps, and rank-and-file members to regularly evaluate progress, adjust strategy, and ensure alignment with CASE’s priorities.
  • Hire, supervise, and develop organizing staff to execute CASE’s strategic priorities.
  • Lead regular planning and evaluation meetings with organizers and representatives.
  • Manage and improve data systems to track membership engagement and drive strategic decision-making.
  • Communicate organizing goals, strategies, challenges, and progress clearly with officers, staff, and members.
  • Develop leadership and build organizational structure.
  • Build a unionwide, member-led representative structure that drives leadership development and broad member participation across every agency and department.
  • Recruit, train, and coach members, representatives, officers, and staff to lead organizing efforts and build workplace power.
  • Develop and deliver organizing, leadership, and campaign training programs, including training new trainers. Provide ongoing coaching, support, and strategic guidance to members through regular 1:1s, team meetings, and campaign planning.
  • Create tools, materials, and systems that strengthen member organizing and leadership development.

Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to the labor movement and building worker power.
  • Minimum of three years leading organizing campaigns, including new organizing, internal organizing or comparable campaigns.
  • Minimum of three years supervising, coaching and developing organizing staff.
  • Experience leading contract campaigns.
  • Experience leading unfair labor practice or economic strikes.
  • Proven ability to develop leaders, expand member participation, manage internal and external tensions under pressure, and build diverse coalitions.
  • Experience working with, building and sustaining a diverse coalition of membership groups.
  • Experience developing and driving escalating organizing campaigns that achieve ambitious goals.
  • Demonstrated leadership, grit, and tenacity to win difficult campaigns.
  • Familiarity and experience working with public-sector unions is preferred.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, project management, and leadership skills.
