Who Are We:
SEIU Nevada represents public- and private-sector workers, including county, hospital, and home care workers. We are part of SEIU, one of the largest unions in the country. Together, we are taking on corporate power and helping to build a wider movement for economic, racial, immigrant, and environmental justice. 

Position Summary: 
Canvassers support SEIU Local 1107’s organizing, membership growth, political, electoral, and member mobilization programs through direct worker, member, voter, and community contact.

Canvassers conduct door-to-door canvassing, worksite outreach, phone banking, text banking, and one-to-one conversations. Depending on campaign assignment, Canvassers may recruit non-union workers into the union and/or non-members for union membership; communicate with voters regarding endorsed candidates; identify support; recruit volunteers; and mobilize members and voters to take action.

Example of Duties: 

  • Conduct door-to-door canvasses of non-union workers, non-members and advocate for union membership. 
  • Phone bank, text bank current and prospective union members.
  • Assist in tracking data and metrics for membership drive programs. 
  • Conducting research on issues, when necessary.
  • Conduct door-to-door canvasses, phone bank, and text bank to voters to support SEIU endorsed candidates and issues. 
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

CRITICAL ATTRIBUTES: 
Skills and Abilities Beneficial for Assignment: 

  • An understanding of organizing principles. Background in community or political organizing or volunteer experience is a plus.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment and passion for social justice and advancing the rights of working people in Nevada. 
  • Ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to learn to use virtual meeting technology (Zoom, Google, Microsoft Teams, Webex).
  • Ability to learn to use peer-to-peer texting/relational organizing apps, such as Hustle, Spoke, and OutVote.
  • Ability to learn to use work with member/voter databases such Votebuilder, NGP VAN and Unionware is a plus.
  • Ability to learn and use Microsoft Office, G-Suite or similar.

Requirements:

  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing a quality volunteer experience including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to the labor movement and improving the lives of working people.
  • Ability to have direct and sometimes challenging conversations, make a clear and confident ask, overcome objections, and move workers to action, including securing union membership commitments and signed membership cards.Ability to follow campaign messaging, organizing plans, scripts, and data-tracking requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced campaign environment.
  • High level of organization, record keeping, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Driver’s license and vehicle required.
  • Cellular Phone or Tablet required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. 

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in the labor movement or with a 501 (c) 3 or 501 (c) 4 is preferred.
  • Fluency in Tagalog, Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Thai or Korean is a plus.

Hours of Work
This is a part-time position working for up to 30 hours per week, generally Tuesday through Saturday. Regular afternoon and evening availability, Tuesday through Friday and Saturday availability are required. Schedules may vary based on organizing, political, electoral, and organizational needs.

Working Conditions
A significant portion of the position is performed outdoors and in the field. Canvassers must be able to walk and stand for extended periods and work outdoors in varied weather conditions, including heat and cold.

Hourly Rates and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $25.00 to $33.60 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
