Job description

We’re a leading progressive public relations, communications, marketing and advertising consultancy, and are looking to hire a Vice President for Public Relations & Communications – Labor Unions.
This position would be split between two main areas: 50% supporting our current clients and 50% bringing in new clients. We are seeking someone who has at least 10 years experience in labor and progressive communications; is extremely smart and a fantastic writer; believes deeply in our causes and clients; has a positive, can-do, solutions-oriented attitude; is a great people-person and creative thinker; can work flexible hours; and is a very hard worker willing to do whatever it takes to win.
This job is remote and can be done in any location, but travel may be required around 3-5 times a year. If you want to work in a fast-paced, advocacy PR firm with tremendous opportunity for growth – literally fighting to save the world – this is the job for you.
Job duties
50% of this position is supporting current clients, including:
- Taking responsibility for and nourishing relationships with current clients to ensure they are: getting all the support they need, when they need it; feel heard and respected by Hailstone; and are enthusiastic about the services they are receiving.
- Taking responsibility for overall client campaigns, including the creation of communications strategies, plans and messaging documents, and then executing those plans.
- Creating communications materials including mail, flyers, emails, text messages, social media, website content, and promotional items.
- Carrying out press relations including writing and blasting out media advisories, pitching reporters, drafting op-eds and letters to the editor, and utilizing our media database system.
- Creating advertising, including digital, print, billboards, radio and TV.
- Writing video scripts and helping to guide production and editing.
- Interviewing and prepping client spokespeople, and writing their speeches and quotes.
- Event planning and logistics coordination.
- Helping to keep the firm’s design files, press clips, photos and archives organized.
50% of this position is bringing in new clients, including:
- Leading our efforts to achieve our goal of bringing in one new client every two months.
- In order to achieve that goal, setting up at least one call with a prospective client every week.
- Identifying prospective clients, creating pitch materials, marketing and promoting the firm, maintaining our database of prospective clients, and doing presentations (both virtual and in-person) to potential clients.
Qualifications
- At least 10 years experience in communications/public relations for labor unions and progressive organizations, causes or candidates.
- Preferred experience leading key communications areas, including: media relations, digital strategy, video production, website redesign, and graphic design.
- A positive, can-do, solutions-oriented attitude and powerful work ethic.
- Tremendous drive, fire in the belly and passion.
- Superb interpersonal skills, which are essential for interacting with clients and vendors.
- Creativity, resilience, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and perseverance in spades.
- Deep understanding and commitment in the causes we work toward and the clients we serve.
- Excellent written, verbal and visual communication skills, with an attention to detail..
- Willingness and ability to work flexible hours to win campaigns.
- At least 3 glowing references from former employers or clients.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Compensation includes
- $125,000+ per year, depending on experience.
- Generous revenue sharing opportunities for bringing in new clients.
- 2 weeks paid time off to start, as well as federal holidays.
- Support with continuing education.
