SEIU Healthcare Michigan (HCMI) is a dynamic labor union and the largest healthcare worker union in the state, representing over 50,000 long-term care and hospital workers. About the position:
The Research Analyst provides research support for external SEIU Healthcare Michigan’s campaigns to bring more healthcare workers into the union through elections, card check, recognition or other methods. The Research Analyst will develop an understanding and analysis of industry and employers to support organizing goals of the department and build power and improve standards for all healthcare workers. Campaigns can include union organizing campaigns, worker issue campaigns, and public policy campaigns, including developing or supporting legislation. This position reports to the External Organizing Director.

Job Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year’s experience as a researcher or doing research support for a labor union or organization
  • Strong commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
  • Experience supporting corporate responsibility or accountability campaign(s) preferred
  • Coursework or experience working in economics, financial analysis, and public policy analysis preferred
  • The ability to learn how to conduct deep analyses of healthcare employer finances and business models is essential to the role
  • The ability and/or interest to understand key employers and growth within outpatient healthcare industry
  • Knowledge of or experience in the healthcare industry and/or the public sector preferred
  • Knowledge of NLRB, MERC, elections/card procedures preferred 
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours as needed
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint as well as good internet and database research skills
  • A desire to be part of a collaborative team in the constantly developing fields of healthcare and workers’ rights  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Compiles, analyzes, summarizes, and presents information on industries, companies, individuals, and issues in support of SEIU Healthcare Michigan’s program
  • Gathers information through desk research as well as field research, both qualitative and quantitative – including engaging with members and soon to be members, site visits, interviews, surveys, networking, attending public meetings and industry events, and more
  • Collaborates with field team extensively and creatively
  • Be part of an incredible team building union density and power with a focus on corporate accountability
  • Synthesizes relevant facts from a large amount of information
  • Develops and implements a weekly work plan; meets deadlines
  • Learns new skills and areas of expertise
  • Performs other duties as required to support the union and its mission

Salary
$70,000 – $75,000/year

The position is a full-time position that occasionally requires long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
