Full-Time Union Representative
Based in New York, NY
The Union of Clerical, Administrative and Technical Staff (UCATS) Local 3882, NYSUT, AFT, NEA, AFL-CIO represents approximately 1,200 clerical, administrative, and technical staff at New York University. UCATS is a member-driven union with a proud history of activism now entering a new era of building rank-and-file power within the vibrant labor organizing scene at NYU.
We are seeking an experienced Union Representative to support UCATS in matters related to contract enforcement, organizing infrastructure, labor advocacy, and collective bargaining. This position will work closely with UCATS officers, stewards, and one other Union Representative on grievances, communications, training, and other tasks to address member issues and build union strength.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to member questions and concerns with accuracy, empathy, and follow-through
- Become an expert on our CBA; NYU policies; and NYC, NYS, and federal employment protections that affect our members
- Identify contract violations, file grievances, and make recommendations for arbitration
- Represent members facing discipline or to resolve non-grievable issues
- Devise and support internal organizing campaigns
- Conduct new member orientations
- Assist in identifying, recruiting, and training member leaders and stewards
- Assist with union communications (emails, newsletters, website, social media, etc.)
- Assist with contract negotiations
- Other administrative tasks (membership record and UCATS database management, office management, event support, etc.)
Requirements:
- 2+ years experience as a union representative
- Experience successfully researching, filing, arguing, and appealing grievances
- Experience organizing union members
- Knowledge of private sector labor law
- Experience negotiating contracts or supporting contract campaigns
- Ability to work independently, meet strict deadlines, manage multiple ongoing tasks, and maintain responsiveness and availability to members
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and argumentation skills
- Demonstrated commitment to the core principles of the labor movement
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse and varied membership
- Proficiency with modern office technology and communications (Microsoft, Google, Zoom, etc.)
- Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ year experience as a union organizer
- Experience in the higher education sector
- Experience handling unfair labor practice cases in the private sector
- Communications experience; proficiency managing social media, websites, etc.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary is $80,000. Benefits include comprehensive medical insurance and annual retirement contributions.
Location:
This position is based in New York, NY out of our NoHo office and is hybrid eligible.
