Temporary Field Organizer
Organizing Department

Based throughout the United States

 

The Teamsters Union is the largest and most diverse union in the country with 1.3 million members. For more than a century, the Teamsters Union has been standing up for working people. Although the union is known as the champion of freight drivers and warehouse workers, the Teamsters represent workers in virtually every occupation imaginable.

The Organizing Department coordinates the organizing activities of Teamsters throughout the country with Joint Councils and Affiliate Locals. The department assists local unions, joint councils, and trade divisions and trade conferences in establishing organizing programs, supporting local campaigns, recruiting, and training volunteers. The Organizing Department also helps to coordinate industry-wide and company-wide organizing efforts, participates in joint organizing campaigns with other unions, and assists in mergers and affiliations.

The Temporary Field Organizer works for a Local affiliate and implements the IBT organizing program in the field through coordination with the department; implementation to include, but not limited to, the following factors: probing, prepping, establishing first contact, list building, assessing support, house visiting, committee building, planning, and implementing job actions, and conducting covert research. Duties may vary according to the needs of an organizing campaign, local affiliate, or the department’s priorities under the general supervision of the Director of Organizing. The Temporary Field Organizer position requires traveling for at least 10 days at a time in various geographic regions and a willingness to work a flexible schedule with lengthy and irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITITES AND MAJOR TASKS

  • Maintains complete lists and records at all phases of campaign; ensures that complete lists with addresses for more than 85% of target unit is complete before campaign is initiated. 
  • Develops rapport with workers and maintains worker contacts. 
  • Builds Community support for campaigns.
  • Assists in filing of election petitions, ULP charges, and negotiations of a stipulated election agreements.
  • Runs effective committee meetings.
  • Oversee the assessment of every unit member involved in a campaign.
  • Identifies, recruits and train workplace leaders in relation to the assigned campaign. 
  • Demonstrates effective public speaking, using appropriate vocabulary, being direct, interesting, and connecting with the group.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. 
  • College degree or a minimum of one year experience in a labor union environment is preferred. 
  • At least one year experience of organizing on strategic leverage campaigns is preferred. 
  • Extensive knowledge of labor union structure, organizing principles, labor movement history, anti-union strategies, and labor law. 
  • Bilingual skills highly desirable. 
  • Must possess a valid US driver’s license. 

The position offers a generous total compensation package, with a salary of $70,304.00, plus health & welfare plan, a retirement plan, and vacation & sick leave plan.
