Digital Organizer
Based in Houston, TX
The Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, a coalition of 75 unions and their 60,000 union members in the Houston region, is hiring a full-time Digital Organizer to start in May. This role will provide digital communications, graphic design, data analytics, and comms infrastructure support for multiple Federation programs, including political, advocacy campaigns, member mobilization / rapid response, and the Apprenticeship Advantage workforce development initiative. This position will play a critical role in strengthening worker power by expanding digital engagement, electing labor-endorsed candidates, and promoting union apprenticeship pathways.
This position is ideal for someone passionate about labor organizing, workforce equity, and using digital tools to build worker power. The Digital Organizer reports directly to the Political and Communications Director and works closely with the Communications and Apprenticeship Advantage Program teams. This is a full-time, onsite position in Houston, Texas through December 2027, with potential extension.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Apprenticeship Advantage Program (app. 30%)
- Manage and maintain Apprenticeship Advantage social media accounts, including content creation, scheduling, and engagement.
- Assist with updating and maintaining the organization’s website, ensuring timely posting of events and program updates.
- Develop and distribute digital communications including email blasts, newsletters, and graphics.
- Support digital storytelling efforts highlighting apprenticeship programs.
- Assist in promoting and recruiting for Apprenticeship Advantage events, career fairs, and open houses
- Support digital coordination of virtual and in-person meetings, including scheduling, invitations, and follow-up communications.
- Maintain digital databases of program participants, volunteers, and partners.
Member Mobilization and Issue Advocacy (app. 40%)
- Create graphics and templates for social media, flyers, and print resources
- Manage and maintain TGCALF social media accounts, including content creation, scheduling, and engagement.
- Assist with updating and maintaining the organization’s website, ensuring timely posting of events, endorsements, and program updates.
- Develop and distribute digital communications including email blasts, newsletters, graphics, and advocacy alerts.
- Support digital storytelling efforts highlighting union members and labor victories.
- Develop, implement, and continually refine the federation’s digital and traditional communications strategy
- Improve organization’s internal and external digital infrastructure, such as adoption of a CRM.
Electoral Field & Digital Infrastructure (app. 30%)
- Assist Political Director and staff in implementing electoral field operations plans.
- Help cut turf, manage digital walk lists, and distribute organizing materials through digital platforms.
- Support digital coordination of canvassers, volunteers, and voter outreach teams.
- Assist with virtual events, town halls, training, and online organizing programs.
- Help track field metrics and assist with reporting on digital and field program performance.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to the mission of the labor movement and worker justice
- Demonstrated effectiveness in using digital organizing and data systems management to achieve labor or nonprofit goals (volunteer recruitment, legislative advocacy, member organizing, etc.)
- Familiarity with organizing tools such as Action Network, VAN, Mobilize, Google Workspace, or similar platforms
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, with strong attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Graphic design experience (Canva, Adobe, etc.)
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in complex political and organizational environments.
- Willingness to work some evenings and weekends, and to travel locally as needed.
- Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable vehicle
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer in central Houston office.
- Ability to drive to apprenticeship programs across Harris County
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience using digital tools in political and advocacy campaign support, event promotion and coordination, and/or workforce development
- Experience in labor, political campaigns, workforce development, or community organizing
- Experience working with Google Workspace applications and Google Drive.
- Ability to navigate relationships within complex political and organizational environments.
COMPENSATION: Annual salary ranges from $63,000 – $73,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits include high quality, employer-paid medical, eye, and dental insurance; in-city travel reimbursement for Apprenticeship Advantage work; generous paid time off benefits; 10% employer contribution to retirement plan on top of base pay; and option of voluntary contributions to 401(k) plan.
