Overview
The purpose of the position of Field Rep/Organizer is to support elected leaders, build leadership, and organize members to build power in their workplaces and communities in order to advance the interests of our members and the broader working class. Field Rep/Organizers support workers where they are, including worksite visits, home visits, and evening and weekend meetings, visits and phone calls - this unique role allows for flexibility for organizers to build their own schedule around workers’ needs as well as their own.
Core Responsibilities
- Performing and teaching members to perform:
- The organizing conversation
- Organizing with a class based analysis and understanding of how racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism and other forms of oppression divide workers.
- Moving members/leaders to action
- Leadership identification, recruitment and training
- Signing up members
- Turnout to meetings and events
- Developing a campaign
- Running meetings
- Taking initiative
- Proficient in our database, Google Sheets/Docs, Hustle and other programs as needed

Qualifications
- The ability to work independently, solve problems, manage time and priorities
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, take direction & support others
- Strong listening, speaking and written communication skills
- The ability to learn our database and communication tools
- A commitment to building worker power in Vermont
- An automobile and valid driver’s license
- Experience as a union organizer (internal or external) or a union member/leader a plus
- Experience working in healthcare and/or higher education a plus
Working Conditions
This position is based in Burlington, Vermont with occasional statewide travel. Field Rep/Organizers are required to go where workers are. These may include worksite visits, home visits, and evening and weekend meetings, visits and phone calls.
Salary & Benefits
As per the agreement between AFT Vermont and MJSU the salary range for this position is $60,069 – $89,671 a year depending on experience.
