Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (with some evenings and weekends) 
Job Location: one of these offices: San Diego, Santa Ana, Riverside, Santa Maria, Merced, Sacramento
Salary Range: $120,000.00/year to $150,000.00/year 
Work Arrangements: In office

Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Organizing and Member Engagement (OME) is a strategic leadership role responsible for supporting the Director of Organizing & Member Engagement, who oversees this critical department in UDW by planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and developing staff. The role is integral to implementing innovative strategies for organizing, including member leadership development and membership growth, and engagement and retaining members, while ensuring operational excellence and alignment with the UDW’s mission. The Assistant Director of OME helps to establish and drive objectives and procedures, as well as monitor budgets, expenses, and metrics.

Strategic Leadership in Organizing

  • Oversee all strategic operations of the organizing work of OME, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance member engagement, organizing efforts, and service delivery.
  • Collaborate with leadership to set departmental objectives, monitor progress, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Work with departmental leadership to bring family child care providers and home care providers together to build a stronger more unified union

Organizing & Member Engagement

  • Lead initiatives to mobilize providers around workplace issues, legislative advocacy, and public policy.
  • Design and execute campaigns to expand union membership and strengthen member participation.
  • Facilitate leadership development programs for members, including training on advocacy, bargaining, and civic engagement.
  • Build relationships with members to identify and address their needs effectively.
  • Oversee coordination of political, human rights, and health & welfare councils, ensuring initiatives align with organizational goals and objectives and expand social justice, civic, and community power.  

Labor Relations & Collective Bargaining

  • Support contract negotiations by preparing strategies, conducting research, and representing the union as needed.
  • Represents districts during negotiations when necessary. 
  • Represent the Union in contract negotiations when necessary.
  • Provide guidance on interpreting collective bargaining agreements and resolving grievances.
  • Partner with union leaders to address labor relations issues and ensure compliance with agreements.
  • Represents Union or assists in representation in grievance procedures and in grievance arbitration hearings.

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Work closely with internal teams, external partners, and community organizations to advance shared goals.
  • Represent the union in meetings with government officials, coalition partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Advocate for policies that benefit providers and their communities.

Team Development

  • Supervise departmental staff, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Develop training programs to enhance staff competencies in organizing and member engagement.

Administrative Oversight

  • Manage departmental budgets, ensuring financial sustainability and alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Oversee data management systems to maintain accurate membership records and operational metrics.
  • Prepare reports on departmental activities for senior leadership.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee staff within assigned area(s).
  • Develop skills of staff and member volunteers. 
  • Oversee management and training of staff and Temporary Employee Organizers programs.
  • Provide guidance and ensure staff’s compliance with UDW policies and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to lead and train staff and volunteers in developing social justice and civic and community power through local political, human rights, and health & welfare councils. 
  • Set performance and deadlines goals that comply with the company’s plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates.
  • Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks.
  • Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Receive complaints and resolve problems.
  • Maintain timekeeping and other records.
  • Pass on information from upper management to employees and vice versa.
  • Prepare and submit performance reports.
  • Decide on rewards and promotions based on performance.
  • Hire and train new employees.
  • Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures and undertake disciplinary actions if necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • 7-10 years of labor union organizing or comparable experience
  • Expert knowledge of labor rights, contract language interpretation, grievance procedures, political advocacy strategies, budgeting processes, and lobbying plans.
  • In-depth knowledge of administrative systems such as word processing tools, records management practices, office procedures, and customer service standards.
  • Proven ability to research complex legal frameworks and summarize policies impacting home care workers or childcare providers effectively.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills for identifying opportunities and developing actionable plans aligned with organizational goals.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated success in public speaking, presentations, stakeholder engagement, and written communication.
  • Excellent analytical and strategic skills to build comprehensive strategies and plans to support various socioeconomic levels.

Preferred Qualifications, Education, and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent experience in business administration, political science, public affairs, public administration, labor relations, or a related field. 
  • 7-10 years’ experience and demonstrated success in the management of staff, programs, and experience working in a union, political, government, and/or non-profit environment, supervising multiple teams and projects with competing timelines.
  • 7-10 years managing political, legislative, and contract campaigns.
  • Advanced knowledge of California’s childcare system and IHSS program and its intersection with labor unions.
  • Comprehensive understanding of local, state, and federal laws affecting home care childcare providers in California.

Requirements: 

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.
