Political Organizer
Based in Oakland, CA
Under the supervision of the Political Director, the Political Organizer supports the organizing efforts of the Labor Council to expand the political and legislative power for working people throughout Alameda County. The Political Organizer works with senior staff to support our leadership and affiliates in winning electoral campaigns for workers and working families. This position is in person, based in our Oakland office.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Political Organizer:
- Lead, motivate, and inspire volunteers to develop into leaders and participate in key voter engagement activities
- Provide administrative and logistical support for political and solidarity actions through publicity, organizing turnout, logistical support for rallies, picket lines, and actions in support of political/contract/solidarity campaigns and community coalitions
- Anchor the council's voter outreach efforts, including logistics and planning, under the direction of the Political Director
- Provide assistance as needed to support the council’s non-profit, Fuerza Education Coalition
- Draft, edit, and send out regular emails, texts, news releases, social media posts, and direct mail regarding union, political, and community events, and, as required, make follow-up calls
- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of organizing power, a commitment to social justice, and provide the organizational skills needed for success
- Formulate and deliver on short-term and long-term organizing plans, volunteer development, and capacity-building goals
- Other duties may be assigned by the Executive Secretary-Treasurer, administrative staff, executive committee, and affiliates' leadership
- Occasional travel required
Qualification Requirements:
- Prior electoral and union organizing experience
- A comprehensive understanding of campaign finance law
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
- Expert at PDI from building lists and targeting training volunteers on the app, and running daily reports
- Highly skilled at applicable software tools, including Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Canva, and social media outlets
- High level of organization, record keeping, and written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work long and irregular hours
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle required
- Bilingual and familiarity in Spanish a plus
This is a full-time salaried position. Pay for this position is $91,728.00 annually and includes a generous benefits package, including fully employer-paid health insurance and a pension. The position is represented by the Pacific Media Workers Guild, CWA 3952.
