Speechwriter to the President
Communications Department

Salary Range:
$117,120 – $157,675

This position is responsible for writing speeches and other communications for the President and has primary responsibility for ensuring that senior officials and other key AFSCME staff have the information and materials to represent the union before internal and external audiences. The incumbent works closely with the President, executive staff, department directors, and affiliate leaders to formulate themes and develop effective presentations that articulate the President’s and the union’s positions on priorities and major issues. The incumbent will also be responsible for writing, researching, and proofing communications drafted across the union’s platforms, particularly with respect to union priorities. This position is also responsible for coordinating strategic communications and projects as assigned. 

DUTIES: 

  • Prepares and writes keynote addresses, policy speeches, ceremonial remarks, general speeches, drafts, and final copy for the President. 
  • Prepares and writes editorials, scripts, emails and social media content for the President and initiatives in support of top union priorities. 
  • Manages speech assignments including maintaining the speech schedule, coordinating the review process, completing all necessary research and ensuring that speeches are prepared timely, appropriately and confidentially. 
  • Conducts research on the topics under consideration through readings of government reports and publications, special labor sources, interviews and meetings with people knowledgeable in the field, and technological sources. 
  • Develops comprehensive communications strategies and narratives. Makes recommendations to develop the union’s public image and special communications projects including organizing and privatization. 
  • Helps solicit and coordinate speaking engagements and other public appearances for officers. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

REQUIREMENTS: 
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in labor relations, communications, political science, journalism or English; and a minimum of seven (7) year of work in the field with at least five (5) years as a speechwriter or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Experience & Skill Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge of written and electronic communication technologies. 
  • Thorough knowledge of AFSCME and union mission, values, objectives and political and legislative interest. 
  • Demonstrated speechwriting experience for high-level executives. 
  • Ability to interview and gain insight about initiatives that allows for the development of persuasive arguments to targeted audiences. 
  • Ability to construct highly developed, persuasive messages and enforce message discipline in multiple communications mediums. 
  • Advanced ability to conduct research, analyze data and make logical conclusions to formulate visionary presentations. 
  • Ability to work independently using initiative to execute projects that also include working with media relation representatives and organizing news events. 
  • Ability to be creative and resolve impediments to accomplish objectives. 
  • Advanced skill in the use of personal computers and desktop publishing software. 

Extended Hours and Travel:

  • Extended hours including weekends and extensive travel may be required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
