Union Organizer

Based in New Orleans, LA

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The United Teachers of New Orleans seeks a Union Organizer. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of organizing including building relationships with workers, parents, and community members, developing union recognition organizing plans for assigned areas, issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists, having 1:1 conversation with potential members to ask them to join their union, and working with the organizing committee to plan and implement member-to-member organizing drives. Union organizing experience and knowledge of the New Orleans educational landscape strongly preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Willing to work late and irregular hours
  • Dedicated to social and economic justice and equitable access to high quality public education
  • Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
  • Have strong communications skills
  • Must be competent in basic computer/web functions, and social media platforms
  • Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
  • Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the Organizing Director, and to work closely with the President and other elected leaders.
  • At least 1 year of previous labor organizing experience
  • Experience in community, student, or labor activism is a plus
  • Experience and relationships in the New Orleans Educational landscape is preferred

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and mobilize workers
  • Attend regular meetings with supervisors and team to discuss progress and plan activities
  • One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members, potential members, parents, community, and allies
  • Develop leaders and build representative organizing committees of workers
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required 
  • Take direction on activities to grow membership and accomplish goals
  • Other duties as assigned or needed for the success of the campaign and union.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Annual salary is $64,170. Salary and Benefits are negotiated as part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiated between the UTNO Staff Union and the United Teachers of New Orleans. Benefits are comprehensive and competitive, including health, vision and dental insurance, paid leave includes vacation, personal, and sick days; travel and expense reimbursements.
