About AAUP-BHSNJ
The American Association of University Professors - Biomedical and Health Sciences of New Jersey is a union of clinicians, teachers, and researchers at Rutgers University, Rowan University, and RWJ Barnabas Health. Our members provide critical care in safety-net hospitals and clinics; conduct groundbreaking medical, public health, and scientific research; and teach the next generation of healthcare researchers and practitioners. Our union works to build power for our members and to ensure high-quality, affordable healthcare and education across New Jersey.
We represent approximately 1500 biomedical faculty, and we have five existing staff. We work closely with and bargain as a single entity with the Rutgers Council of AAUP Chapters, a strong academic union working to promote a democratic, inclusive vision for higher education.
Position Overview
As an Organizer/Lead Organizer/Senior Organizer for AAUP-BHSNJ, you will play a central role in identifying and developing member leaders, building and maintaining worker leadership structures across departments, and developing and implementing union organizing and contract campaigns. This position reports to the AAUP-BHSNJ Executive Director.
Responsibilities include:
- Identify, recruit, train, and develop member leaders to empower them to effectively organize their coworkers, recruit new members, and address issues at work;
- In partnership with union officers and member leaders, develop and implement campaign plans that engage members to win strong collective negotiations agreements and state-level legislation;
- Build and maintain deep organizational structure across schools and departments;
- Where appropriate, identify strategic areas for new organizing; and, in collaboration with union officers and member leaders, build and implement new organizing campaigns;
- Work with members to plan and execute events such as trainings, rallies, and teach-ins;
- Facilitate partnership with other Rutgers unions
- Set, track, and meet concrete goals for membership growth, and organize/recruit new members;
- In collaboration with members and communications staff, develop and maintain messaging/ communications materials;
- Maintain consistent communication with leaders and members;
- Support the development and work of member-led committees;
- File public records requests and gather data to support campaign plans
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in labor organizing, as either a staff organizer or member leader. Experience in healthcare or education unions is a plus (but not required);
- Demonstrated track record of identifying, recruiting, and training member leaders, and building and implementing strategic and effective campaigns;
- Excellent listening, interpersonal, and communication skills and ability to connect with members and not-yet members from a range of backgrounds and with varied concerns.
- Strong sense of initiative and follow-through on campaign plans;
- Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills; ability to develop work plans with limited supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks;
- Computer proficiency, including proficiency in Microsoft office suite, including excel, and google suite;
- Ability to work through disagreement and bring people together around shared goals;
- Creativity and strong sense of strategic thinking;
- Adaptability; ability to reflect and learn from on past successes and failures;
- Commitment to the labor movement, social justice principles, and worker empowerment and leadership;
- Bachelor’s Degree;
- Driver’s license
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- This is a full-time, in person role. Our office is located at 11 Stone St., New Brunswick, NJ. The organizer is expected to spend time working in person with our members in Newark, NJ; New Brunswick, NJ; and Piscataway, NJ, with occasional travel to meet with our Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine members in South Jersey.
- Driver’s license is required, and access to a car is strongly preferred.
Salary and Benefits:
- Competitive salary ($70,000 – $100,000) commensurate with experience;
- Benefits package includes health care, dental, and life insurance; 8% Employer retirement match after 1 year of employment; and professional development funds;
- Generous PTO, including: accrued vacation days, holidays, float/personal days, and sick days
