Job Description
Would you like to work for an organization promoting worker rights? Would you like to help others learn about the labor movement? The Milwaukee Area Labor Council is looking to hire a part-time / temporary staff position. We are an umbrella organization for local labor unions and we are looking for an individual who is team-oriented and enthusiastic about making the Milwaukee area a better place to work and live.
Part-Time Education and Organizing Coordinator
- Grant-based 1 year position, with possible extension based on funding availability
- Opportunity to work as an important part of a team conducting activities that support the principles of economic justice in a large Midwestern city.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
- Staff the Education and Organizing committee and implement committee workplan.
- Field inquiries from workers interested in organizing a union in their workplace.
- Help build structures for successful and sustainable member engagement to strengthen affiliate involvement, as well as organizing for the long term.
- Use MALC social media platforms for networking and mobilization.
- Conduct outreach to union affiliates and labor council delegates in Milwaukee, Washington, and Ozaukee counties to increase engagement and activity in those counties.
- Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Self-motivated individual able to work independently on workplan.
- Dynamic interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with diverse constituencies.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Grassroots organizing experience in either a community or workplace context and/or union organizing.
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with the Microsoft office suite/ Google docs & sheets.
- Willing to travel in metro Milwaukee area (driver’s license and dependable vehicle required).
- Willingness to work evenings or weekends, when needed.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a strong team spirit.
- A commitment to building a strong labor movement dedicated to economic, social and racial justice a must. Familiarity with unions and labor movement structure a plus.
This is a part-time hourly position (up to 20 hours per week) paying $20.00 per hour.
- Single person healthcare plan and quarterly cell phone stipend.
- Flexible scheduling, including some work-from-home hours.
- This has traditionally been a union-represented position.
