TAAAC
Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County
Executive Director
Based in Annapolis, MD
Founded 105 years ago, the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County (TAAAC) exists to further the professional concerns, economic interests, and human and civil rights of its members. TAAAC also advocates for equitable, quality education for all students in Anne Arundel County Public Schools and works to advance racial, social, and economic justice for the entire community. TAAAC is a union of educators, including classroom teachers, school counselors, social workers, school psychologists, and speech language pathologists. TAAAC is proud that 6700 educators or almost 90% of all eligible Unit 1 educators have elected to be members of the union.
This is an exciting and challenging time for the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County, with extraordinary opportunities. TAAAC has been well-established as a service-model union with a strong financial standing and dedicated staff. TAAAC is well positioned at this time not only to continue its work of member representation but also to shift to an organizing union model to more effectively engage and harness the strength and collective power of its 6700 members. This shift will produce a more active participatory union in which members understand how to engage and make their voices heard through the union’s democratic processes.
With an operating budget of approximately $3.2 million, assets including a soon-to-be-purchased union building, and a professional staff of 11, the next Executive Director will have a diverse set of responsibilities: overseeing the transition to an organizing model, contract negotiations and enforcement, advancing labor management relationships, and fiscal as well as staff oversight. Contract negotiations, contract enforcement, and labor management relationships are anticipated to comprise approximately half of the Executive Director’s time, while ensuring the implementation of the strategic plan, staff and fiscal oversight, and overseeing the daily operations of the union comprising the balance. The Executive Director works in partnership with the President to carry out the directives and vision of the Board. The Executive Director will maintain consistent communication with the President as well as the Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors seeks a leader with proven skills in union organizing, contract negotiating, implementing a strategic vision, and knitting together a cohesive, responsive, and effective staff team. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking visionary and collaborative individual who brings passion, skill, and readiness to a high-caliber and impactful leadership role. The Board of Directors is looking for a leader who will embrace the vision of an activated membership and who will serve as a strategic thought partner to the union President. The Executive Director will continue to build a path towards an engaged membership that has the power to improve educators’ working conditions while also making sure educators have competitive compensation and benefits as well as improved quality of life. Candidates for the Executive Director role must bring genuine passion, empathy, courage, integrity, understanding of the value of and need to protect public education, public service, and democracy, and a commitment to advancing racial, social, and economic justice for all.
The salary range for this position annually is between $160,000 and $180,000 and will be commensurable with experience. The comprehensive benefits package includes health, dental, disability, and life insurance, an automobile expense stipend, and enrollment as a member of the TAAAC retirement plan. TAAAC provides paid holidays based on the school system calendar and offers annual leave as well as sick leave.
