The Teamsters Union is the largest and most diverse union in the country with 1.3 million members. For more than a century, the Teamsters Union has been standing up for working people. Although the union is known as the champion of freight drivers and warehouse workers, the Teamsters represent workers in virtually every occupation imaginable.
The Organizing Department coordinates the organizing activities of Teamsters throughout the country. The department is available to assist local unions, joint councils, and trade divisions and trade conferences in establishing organizing programs, supporting local campaigns, recruiting, and training volunteers. The Organizing Department also helps to coordinate industry-wide and company-wide organizing efforts, participates in joint organizing campaigns with other unions, and assists in mergers and affiliations.
The Deputy Director participates in the planning and implementation of Department programs, assists in the direction of field personnel, oversees, and sometimes runs field campaigns, and performs various strategic and operational duties requiring thorough knowledge of (1) running national, regional and local organizing campaigns; (2) running strategic campaigns; (3) national labor laws; (4) the department’s programs and procedures; and (5) the internal structure of the IBT particularly relating to the workings of the office. This position requires traveling in various geographic regions and a willingness to work a flexible schedule with lengthy and irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITITES AND MAJOR TASKS
- Assists in the development and implementation of the organizing program.
- Assists in overseeing all field programs including, where necessary, directly participating in the execution of said campaigns in the field.
- Designs, plans and implements training programs for field operations.
- Helps interview, hire, evaluate, counsel and terminate department employees, as necessary.
- Assists with planning, implementation, field operations and all other aspects of national, multi-local, industry, strategic, and regional campaigns.
- Works in the field to start campaigns, implement programs, supervise campaign operations, and address problems as they may arise in the field.
- Trains promising organizers to lead campaigns by working directly with them in the field.
- Ability to facilitate training programs for Field Organizers, Lead Organizers and Coordinators.
- Interacts with IBT Departments and offices.
- Assists with ensuring implementation of all campaign decisions.
- Fills in for the Director by assuming speaker role at meetings and conferences as necessary and assigned by the Director.
- Assists with the development and implementation of training seminars and conferences on labor-related issues and skills.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree required.
- Extensive knowledge of all elements of an organizing campaign, strategic and leverage campaigns, first contract campaigns and decertification campaigns required.
- At least ten years’ organizing experience required.
- At least five years’ experience in a supervisory capacity preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of labor union structure, organizing principles, labor movement history, anti-union strategies, and labor law.
- Bilingual skills highly desirable.
- Must possess a valid US driver’s license with Real ID and valid US Passport
- Must be able to handle a demanding work schedule.
- Must have demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to listen effectively.
- Must be able to travel extensively and work in the field for lengthy periods of time.
The IBT offers a generous total compensation package, with a salary of $150,000.00, 100% employer-paid health & welfare plan, a pension plan, optional 401(k) participation, FICA reimbursement, and vacation & sick leave plan.
