Northside AFT is a proud, member-driven local union rooted in the fight for educational and social justice. We represent educators and school employees in the Northside Independent School District, and we are committed to building power in the workplace and across our local community within organized labor. We’re looking for a passionate organizer who is ready to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with educators, defend public education, and build a union that wins.

Position Overview
The Organizer / Member Representative is a full-time position reporting to the Local President and Chief of Staff. Organizers play a vital role in building union strength and advancing our collective voice. This position involves deep organizing in schools, supporting union campaigns, identifying and developing member leaders, and resolving workplace issues through organizing, advocacy, and solidarity.

Core Responsibilities

  • Recruit, engage, and retain union members across assigned worksites
  • Identify potential worksite leaders and support their growth through mentorship, training, and one-on-one support
  • Develop, plan, and execute organizing campaigns around key issues in coordination with union leadership and members
  • Build organizing committees and empower members to take collective action
  • Organize union members to win improved working conditions at the worksite and district level
  • Conduct one-on-one conversations, school visits, home visits,online campaigns, and phone outreach to build strong relationships
  • Coordinate with members to turn individual issues into collective actions
  • Maintain and input organizing assessments and data using internal systems
  • Help create organizing materials using tools such as Google Suite and Canva
  • Lead meetings, trainings, and workshops for union members
  • Distribute union materials and ensure visibility at all campuses
  • Collaborate with the President and Chief of Staff on strategy and campaign planning
  • Be a visible and vocal advocate for public education, workers’ rights, and racial and social justice

Required Qualifications

  • Commitment to the labor movement and the mission of Northside AFT
  • Organizing experience, especially in unions, education, political, or community-based campaigns
  • Familiarity with public education issues and the challenges facing school workers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including digital communications
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Canva; basic database entry skills required
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Flexibility to work some irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and ability to travel occasionally
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 20 pounds of materials between campuses
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
  • Spanish proficiency is a plus

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salary ranging from $50,000 – $58,000 based on experience 
  • Stipends for additional duties and or degree levels may apply
  • 10% employer-paid retirement contribution after one year of service
  • Health insurance is offered (coverage begins on the 1st of the month following employment)

Paid time off includes:

  • 10 vacation days per year (5 may roll over)
  • 10 sick/discretionary days per year 
  • Two weeks paid during winter break
  • One week paid at Thanksgiving
  • One week paid during Spring Break
  • 3 (Local) to 5 (if you must travel outside of Texas) days of bereavement leave for immediate family
  • Summer work schedule is determined by the President based on union needs

Benefits are available after a 90-day probationary period

Additional Expectations

  • Staff must provide two weeks' written notice to resign to retain any accrued leave
