Full-Time Organizer
Based in New York City, NY
The UAW Local 4100 is seeking a full-time Organizer. UAW Local 4100 represents over 2,100 postdoctoral researchers across Columbia University and Mount Sinai. Our members are innovators and leaders in research, and a part of a growing movement of academic workers unionizing across the country. As the first unionized postdoctoral workers at a private university, our members are committed to raising researcher working conditions in New York City and across the country through strong membership engagement and political and legislative activism.
We seek a staff organizer who will support ongoing organizing as we prepare for our next contract campaigns in 2026 and advocate for the rights of our membership, while working with elected Union leadership in the day-to-day functions of the Union.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Full time active outreach to researchers in the work-place.
- Provide support to Stewards and worker organizers with organizing and communications to the units.
- Identify and develop leadership within the Union.
- Plan and lead trainings, workshops, and one-on-one assistance for Stewards and organizers on organizing best practices.
- Union event planning, logistics, and turnout.
- Grievance-handling and supporting researchers facing workplace issues.
- Draft, design, and edit informational materials, including coordinating communications strategy and media.
- Data entry.
- Strategy development for issue-based and contract campaigns.
Successful candidates for this highly member-facing position will have a proven track record of organizing and a people-person attitude.
Job Requirements:
- Dedication and enthusiasm for the labor movement and social justice.
- Ability to work with a diverse workforce, collaborate as part of a team, and work in a deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to frame issues and follow messaging in accordance with the Local’s mission and principles.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of common office software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 years of experience in labor organizing.
- Experience with academic employment.
- Familiarity with the research workplace.
- Experience with international workers and different cultural backgrounds.
- Experience/familiarity with communications, marketing, presentations, volunteer coordination, and training or related as well as contractual workplace issues.

Terms of Employment: This position will be covered by UAW Staff United and will include competitive salary ($74,692 – $81,088 starting range, depending on experience, with annual raises), healthcare benefits, paid personal time off, and sick time.
