Legal Director
Colorado Independent Drivers United – Driver Support Organization
Based in Denver, CO
Colorado Independent Drivers United – Driver Support Organization (CIDU-DSO) is a worker organization, affiliated with CWA Local 7777, representing gig workers in Colorado, primarily Uber and Lyft drivers. For years, app-based workers have had their rights and their input into their working lives restricted. Finally after years of struggle we were successful in passing legislation which provides education, transparency and deactivation protections for rideshare drivers.
CIDU is seeking a full-time Legal Director to lead and coordinate the organization's legal strategy, including oversight of arbitration and litigation matters arising from drivers' employment status, deactivation disputes, and enforcement of new rights and protections under Colorado law SB24-075. The Legal Director will oversee a staff attorney and a paralegal, and work closely with CIDU's Executive Director to build a comprehensive legal program that defends and advances driver rights.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, and oversee CIDU's legal strategy to protect and enforce the rights of app-based drivers under SB24-075 and other applicable state and federal laws.
- Supervise and support legal team members, including a staff attorney and a paralegal.
- Lead the organization's arbitration advocacy related to driver deactivations and unjust terminations, ensuring robust representation and due process.
- Monitor and coordinate CIDU's involvement in strategic litigation, including filing or supporting enforcement actions related to non-compliance by Transportation Network Companies (TNCs).
- Assist in interpreting and enforcing provisions of SB24-075 related to fair hearings, arbitration panels, and administrative relief mechanisms.
- Work closely with community organizations, public agencies, and legal partners to advance systemic reforms.
- Draft legal memos, policy analyses, guidance documents, and public comments.
- Travel within Colorado for hearings, trainings, and driver outreach as necessary.
- Help maintain a respectful, inclusive, and culturally competent work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Law school graduate and admitted to, or willing to apply for admission to the Colorado Bar Association. Experience with labor or employment law, previous trial experience and previous experience working with non-profits is a plus.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant legal experience, including litigation, administrative hearings, or arbitration.
- Experience with labor and employment law, workers' rights, or civil rights law preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership, management, and supervision experience in a legal setting.
- Strong written and oral advocacy skills; ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
- Experience working with low-wage or immigrant worker populations.
- Familiarity with Colorado SB24-075 and its protections for app-based drivers is a significant plus.
- Multilingual ability (Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, Nepali, or Kiswahili) is preferred but not required.
Particular consideration will be given to candidates with for-hire driving experience, fluency in language(s) other than English, and community leadership in the region’s diverse immigrant and refugee communities. Applicants will be considered regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, marital status, disability, religious or political affiliation, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity. CIDU encourages people of all backgrounds to apply.
