Job Summary
The Committee of Interns and Residents is looking for a Lead Worksite Organizer for the University of California (UC) team. This position will be responsible for assisting, leading, coaching, and mentoring CIR staff covering our UC chapters throughout the state of California. The Lead Worksite Organizer will report to the UC Regional Director.
What You’ll Do
- Closely collaborate with your supervisor in implementing the strategy of the team/department based on the organizational goals.
- Build and maintain appropriate relationships with key hospital administrators, community allies, etc.
- Implement values-based programming and innovative ways of engaging members.
- Solicit resident involvement in events, committees, and meetings.
- Seek knowledge/skills appropriately and proactively from a supervisor, other staff, and independent research.
- Effectively understand and manage contract negotiation process and contract enforcement: building committee, developing relevant proposals, leading negotiations, managing expectations and managing the team, communicating with members, and successful ratification vote.
- Effectively address grievances and resident disciplinary issues, demonstrating an understanding of the contractual procedures and the appropriate role of the organizer.
- Provide clear guidance and direction to the staff you are collaborating with or leading, keeping them “on task” to maintain steady progress toward accomplishing defined goals.
- Assist in motivating, inspiring, and creating enthusiasm among staff for the work of CIR.
- Collaborate closely with your supervisor to improve the effectiveness of your team/department by proactively identifying opportunities for improvement, proposing solutions, taking risks by implementing experiments, and working with your supervisor to measure and assess the effectiveness of such experiments.
- Communicate with staff and members in a manner that limits misunderstandings, demonstrates respect and builds trust. Effective communication includes but is not limited to: maintaining a professional and respectful composure when dealing with staff and members, attentive listening, and “closed-loop” communication that confirms receipt of important instructions and information.
- Meet regularly and communicate with supervisor, raise concerns or problems as soon as they come up, and provide suggestions, ideas, and feedback for improvement.
- Provide coaching to junior staff members as appropriate. This includes modeling effective work techniques, providing informal feedback and suggestions, offering encouragement, and making oneself available to answer questions.
- Become engaged in an ongoing, self-driven process of learning about topics related to the work including communication methods and techniques, hospital financing and GME funding, various medical specialties and their culture, recent technological developments in healthcare, and current political and economic developments that may impact hospitals and healthcare.
What Makes a Great Candidate
- 2-year minimum experience in internal organizing
- Proficiency in job-related technical knowledge and ability to facilitate the learning of others.
- Ability to think critically through problems, manage conflict and adversarial situations.
- Recognizable interest in the work and the membership with a desire to advance the organization.
- Ability to proactively identify the needs of the organization and respond with solutions.
- Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and handle fast-paced settings, multiple projects, and tight deadlines.
- Critically evaluate one’s own performance, incorporating feedback into improving performance.
- Ability to build and manage relationships with colleagues and members.
- Motivated to develop one’s own skills, acquire knowledge and proactively seek opportunities to learn.
- Ability to effectively and appropriately communicate with potential members, staff, administrators, and supervisors.
- Demonstrates respectful and responsible behavior.
- Well-prepared, organized, and able to manage time effectively.
- Familiarity with statistics, quantitative and qualitative research
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and, Google Suite
- Valid driver’s license
- Must reside in the state of California.
- Ability to work long hours and travel extensively within and outside the region.
- Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides.
CIR Offers
Competitive salary ($104,820 – $126,688) commensurate with experience and in compliance with the staff collective bargaining agreement.
