Overview of Position:
The Member Communications Specialist will play a key role in the MTA communications team, working closely with other communications staff, locals and all MTA divisions to develop and implement member communications strategy and promote key campaigns for the union and affiliated locals - with a focus on assisting MTA leadership communication with locals and rank and file MTA members. 

The position involves strategic planning, content creation and collaboration with various stakeholders to aid in winning crucial campaigns for educators, students and communities, and to ensure strong union member engagement. 

Essential job Functions:

  • Develop a robust member communications strategy for increasing member engagement, activism and recruitment through digital (including social media, text messaging, email, etc.), print, video and other forms of communication.
  • Create and drive member communications for MTA overall, maintaining and coordinating consistent messaging. 
  • Identify and respond to the communications needs of locals. In collaboration with Communications, field and other staff, assists and trains locals in the development and implementation of member-facing materials and digital content, including social media. 
  • Work with the Web Content Manager and potentially other Communications staff to develop engaging digital content, including social media, web and email content.
  • Detect potential issues and events of significance to members, elected leaders, and staff, and make appropriate recommendations for effective communications activities and programs to the Director. 
  • Work extensively with staff at all levels within all divisions and affiliates.
  • Work on written and video material for MTA websites.
  • Advise other MTA staff on web communications, ensuring alignment with organizational messaging and branding,
  • Work closely with staff to develop appropriate member communications approaches for specific programs, issues, and events.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Visual & Brand Designer and Editor/Writer in the development, design and preparation of organizing and membership materials
  • Works with Communications and other staff to produce documents and literature in support of the programs of MTA divisions.
  • Assist in the production of the Association's major publication, MTA Today, through writing and story collaboration and strategy with the Editor/Writer and rest of the Communications department.
  • Assist in the Association’s political action campaigns.
  • Serve as consultant to MTA committees, as assigned.
  • Provide analytical data on social media and digital communications.
  • Prepares internal communications, as required, for mailings, publications, and websites.
  • Develops social media and email campaign content.
  • Work cooperatively with MTA staff and members at all levels
  • Writes and edits articles, reports, and newsletters for digital and print. Covers and reports on events and activities, as required.
  • Work with Communications staff on leadership email communications to MTA members.
  • Collaborates in the development and production of video content for the MTA website and other channels.
  • Take photographs for MTA publications, websites, and social media channels.
  • Creates, edits, distributes, and analyzes surveys for divisions and affiliates.
  • Handles sensitive and confidential emails and other materials with appropriate discretion for confidentiality and privacy, providing appropriate updates to the Communications Director.
  • Assists and trains locals in developing member communication strategies.
  • Appears, as required, at forums and other events to represent the MTA. 
  • Provides training in communications issues for MTA locals and MTA staff.,
  • May be asked to assist in maintaining and updating the MTA’s website as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least five years of experience in member communications and digital strategy for a labor union, a nonprofit, governmental or similar organization strongly preferred.
  • Top email marketing and technical skills.
  • Exceptional writing skills, specifically in writing copy for leaflets, emails, web, social media and other forms of member communications.
  • Proven ability to exercise independent judgment, initiative and discretion.
  • Familiarity with proofreading, copy editing, desktop publishing, and design and production of promotional materials.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and enthusiasm.
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a wide variety of groups and individuals.
  • Ability to handle a variety of assignments simultaneously.
  • Willingness to function as part of a team.
  • Ability to, or capacity to be trained to, perform technical functions, including digital photography, video production, and basic website updating/maintenance.
  • Personal transportation; willingness to travel (generally, statewide) and work nights and weekends
