Supervising Attorney

Based in either Portland or Salem, OR

 

SEIU Local 503 is a dynamic and growing union. Over the last 20 years we have tripled in size and are now the largest union in Oregon. Our work has led to incredible gains for working families, including standard-setting contracts in the long-term care industry, historic investments in public services, raising the minimum wage, and making steps toward a fair and equitable economy for Black, white and brown people in every corner of our state.

The Supervising Attorney will lead the union’s Legal Department and coordinate the legal strategy necessary to support our diverse and growing membership. Work includes leading our legal team in supporting contracts and growth campaigns, arbitrations, NLRB and state employment relations board work, advising union staff and leadership, state and federal court work, election work, and being actively involved in a broad spectrum of union activity.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Supervising Legal Department staff, including attorneys and law clerks; serving as chief legal counsel for the union.
  • Preparation and presentation of grievance arbitration cases including regular advisement of the Contract Enforcement Team on grievances.
  • Preparation and presentation of representation and unfair labor practice cases before the National Labor Relations Board and the Employment Relations Board.
  • Supporting litigation in state and federal trial courts.
  • Preparation of appellate briefs.
  • Advising staff and leaders on contract administration and other labor and employment issues.
  • Identifying and alerting staff to emerging legal problems.
  • Staff and membership training.
  • Providing legal support for the political program of the union.
  • Determining the outsourcing of legal counsel as needed.
  • Advising supervisory staff on personnel issues.
  • Providing guidance around union governance and union elections.

Additional duties:

  • Participate directly in political action, such as door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and get-out-the-vote drives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications & Requirements:

  • 5 years of relevant experience, including at least 3 years of experience as a labor attorney.
  • Member of Oregon State Bar (current or within six months of hire).
  • Freedom to work irregular hours, including weekends, and to travel as needed.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The salary range for this position is $114,720 to $151,704 annually.
  • The employer pays 15% on top of your salary toward your 401k retirement benefit.
  • Fully paid premiums for employee healthcare (medical, dental, and vision), eligible dependents and domestic partner benefits.
  • Flexible Spending Account of an additional $210 per month (with cash option) and cell phone allowance of $90 per month.
  • Relocation assistance is also available.
