The Union has approximately 450 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 185,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in eleven states and Washington, DC. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has two million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
We currently offer an opportunity for a union Representative to help build power in our New Jersey janitorial worksites. 32BJ members work in universities, office buildings, government sites, schools, and residential buildings in locations throughout the state.

Responsibilities include:

• Implementing program campaigns across worksites.
• Identifying and developing worksite leaders.
• Identifying and developing Shop Stewards and/or building leaders in all assigned sites.
• Expanding the activist base of the Union by connecting members to a variety of 32BJ activities.
• Developing worksite or company-wide contract campaigns.
• And other duties, as assigned.

Scope and nature of work:

• Field Representatives are expected to effectively manage their time, develop strategic plans, and work independently with minimal supervision. They should also be responsive to direction and able to engage positively with program directors and supervisors.
• Flexibility is essential, as Field Representatives must adjust their schedules to meet the needs of ongoing campaigns or initiatives. This may include working long or irregular hours, some weekends, and assignments outside of their regular routes. The position is based in Newark, NJ with regular travel throughout New Jersey.
• As leaders within 32BJ, Field Representatives are expected to lead by example and embody the union’s mission and values. Their conduct should reflect the standards and behaviors expected of all 32BJ leaders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire members to develop as leaders and actively participate in key union programs (e.g., political, membership growth, and bargaining).
• Ability to understand and follow campaign strategies and timelines, and to develop individual work plans that align with broader goals.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to build respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to challenge and mobilize workers to take action and engage in union efforts.
• Ability to develop and implement strategies that support worksite leaders in enforcing collective bargaining agreements.
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize work in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment—both independently and as part of a team.
• Comfort using and adapting to online tools, mobile applications, tracking systems, and database platforms.
• Bilingual English/Spanish required.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and labor movements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• This is a full-time position that regularly requires hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.
• This position is based in the Newark, New Jersey office.
• This position requires travel to worksites throughout the state of New Jersey.
• Valid driver’s license and car with insurance required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• This position requires traveling to worksites throughout the state and participating in events, marches, and demonstrations.
• Ability to ascend and descend stairs, and walk through large work sites,
• Ability to carry and set-up portable tables, chairs, and other equipment as needed for rallies and other events.
• Participate in marches and demonstrations that can be at least three to four hours in duration.
• Some overnight travel to other East Coast locations may be required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary for this position is $66,829.64 per year. 32BJ offers a full benefits package that includes a fully employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. We offer retirement benefits, including both a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days, and four personal days. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
