Director of Communications

Kansas National Education Association (KNEA) seeks qualified candidates for the Director of Communications position.
Position Description: The Director of Communications is responsible for advancing the mission and goals of KNEA by developing, implementing, and managing internal and external communications strategies that amplify the Association’s voice and support its work across all departments. This position works closely with the Governmental Relations team and KNEA officers to ensure consistent messaging and coordinated communication efforts. The Director is also a key partner in association-wide initiatives, including a planned transition to a new version of the KNEA website. The position offices at KNEA Headquarters in Topeka, Kansas.

- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute comprehensive communication strategies
- Experience with messaging in support of legislative and advocacy campaigns
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with elected leaders
- Knowledge of website content management systems and digital communications platforms
- Experience with media relations, press releases, and earned media strategies
- Understanding of branding and consistency across communications materials
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Ability to use technology for research, publication, and presentation purposes
- A degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field is preferred; however, substantial relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead development and implementation of internal and external communication strategies
- Support all KNEA departments with strategic messaging, materials, and outreach
- Collaborate closely with Governmental Relations on messaging for legislative and political campaigns
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with KNEA officers
- Coordinate public relations and media outreach, including writing press releases, op-eds, and media advisories
- Oversee messaging and branding consistency across all communications platforms
- Assist with planning and content development during the transition to a new website platform
- Produce content for newsletters, email communications, speeches, and talking points
- Manage KNEA’s digital communications presence, including website updates and social media strategy
- Provide communication support for events, member engagement efforts, and organizing campaigns
- Other duties as assigned
Salary and Fringe Benefits:
- Under the KNEA/Kansas Staff Organization contract
- Salary Range is between $75,400 to $107,900, based upon experience
- Liberal fringe benefits and leave, as provided in the contract
