Overview:
NYSUT - one of the largest public employee unions in the country – is seeking organizers to help build our union using sound organizing practices. At present, this is a 3-year grant-funded position. As part of the organizing department, this position will organize new bargaining units for NYSUT. Organizing will focus on both the public and private sector. Project Organizers will report to either the Director or the Manager of Organizing and will also receive direction from other organizers as appropriate.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the other organizers and project organizers to carry our organizing strategy determined by Lead Organizer.
  • Research areas of organizing potential in health care, education and municipal professions.
  • Assist with external organizing campaigns - recruit, develop, and mobilize worker organizing committees.
  • Assist with first contract campaigns by providing organizing support.
  • Perform home and worksite visits, including one-to-one conversations, to support external organizing.
  • Work with other NYSUT departments and local leadership to help identify external organizing issues.
  • Assist with meetings, events and planning, turnout, phone banks, actions, marches, etc. at worksites and beyond.
  • Develop and maintain all necessary computer skills (including VAN or other similar programs as directed) to perform these tasks efficiently.
  • Support other key local union priorities, as needed
  • Potential long or irregular hours, weekend hours, and travel.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience as a full-time external organizer, or equivalent community or rank and file member organizing experience, with a track record of success.
  • Strong written, verbal communication, and listening skills.
  • Must be able to adjust to changing priorities and strategies.
  • Able to think strategically and respond to rapidly changing situations.
  • Willing to do home and worksite one to one conversations.
  • Able to commit to long and irregular hours, weekend work, and frequent travel - potentially for extended periods within New York State, based on assignment.
  • Residence in the locale is preferred
  • Dedication to social, economic, and educational justice - and a strong commitment to the labor movement.
  • Basic computer literacy and a willingness to use technology where needed.
  • Able to work effectively and harmoniously as part of a team.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Must have a car and possess a valid Driver’s License
