Organizer-in-Training

UPTE, CWA Local 9119 is a dynamic member-run union representing over 20,000 workers at the University of California, Department of Energy Labs and California Community Colleges. We are seeking an Organizer-in-Training to assist in Organizer and train as an future union Organizer and to help build a militant, progressive Union and labor movement.
Key responsibilities:
- Assist UPTE Organizers, Lead Organizers, and member leaders in the work of the Union
- Provide a broad range of support to UPTE Organizers and member leaders
- Help train members to plan, lead and conduct organizing, political, legislative, and issue-oriented campaigns
- Help develop member leaders to run strong chapters capable of addressing the needs of members.
- Recruit new members to participate in union activities and political campaigns. Regular one-on-one contact with members is required.
- Develops and maintains effective worksite leadership structures through the recruitment, training, and support of stewards and other union leaders.
- Helps to develop and deliver formal and informal education programs to train stewards and worksite leaders.
- Work in all elements of organizing through leadership development and mentoring, instead of assuming primary responsibility for success.
Skills and knowledge required:
- A commitment to social justice and building a movement of working people
- Ability to conduct one-on-one visits, site visits, in person meetings, phone calls, video meetings, and other interactions with members and potential members
- Prior experience with labor organizing, activism, or community organizing a plus!
Qualifications:
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database
- Valid California driver's license, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are occasionally required.

Annual compensation for the Organizing-in-Training will be $70,000 for an expected period of several months.
