The Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE Institute) www.acceinstitute.org, in San Diego, CA is seeking a passionate and energetic individual interested in starting their social justice career at the grassroots community level.

The Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment. ACCE is a multi-issue, membership-based community organization building the power and voice of people of color and poor and working families across the state of California. With offices in 6 cities, ACCE works to fight for economic, racial, and social justice. ACCE’s grassroots approach prioritizes training and empowering community residents to wage effective bottom-up campaigns with a heavy emphasis on direct community action, corporate accountability, and structural reforms.

About the Position We seek an Organizer with a passion for working with marginalized residents and low-income communities of color to organize, build power, and wage campaigns to bring about policy changes that improve their standard of living and quality of life. The position requires the ability to work some evening hours and weekends. We provide paid training; experience is a plus but not necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct strategic and intensive outreach efforts to residents in San Diego
  • Build one-on-one relationships with residents
  • Build a base of residents who want to organize to improve their communities through door-to-door and phone outreach
  • Identify, recruit and develop an ever-growing number of grassroots leaders who take ownership of the group and do work to lead it forward
  • Conduct individual and group meetings with residents to move organizing campaigns forward
  • Engage, motivate and mobilize members and leaders to carry out and engage in citywide and statewide campaigns to build power
  • Responsible for meeting expectations and goals – including recruiting new members, collecting membership dues, reporting and evaluation, leadership development, attending meetings, proactive in learning the ACCE model of organizing and approach to leadership development
  • Planning and carrying out actions and events to support members' organizing efforts.
  • Spend at least 4 hours per day doorknocking

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Self-motivated - proven ability to take initiative, work independently, and overcome obstacles
  • Belief in organizing for power
  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent listening, oral and written skills
  • Ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends
  • Must be able to engage in community outreach through door knocking, and conduct home visits for up to 4-hours per day
  • Organizational skills to manage and prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and changing environment, independently and as a member of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of issues facing communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families
  • Experience working with similar membership-based community organizations or labor unions
  • Skilled at one-to-one organizing, successful experience at mass turnout, and experience with grassroots fundraising
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases and Internet
  • Bilingual English/Spanish and/or experience working in multilingual environments
  • Valid driver’s license and a dependable vehicle to travel for work

Pay and Benefits
Up to $43,000 annually and a generous health and dental benefits package, car mileage reimbursement, and cell phone allowance. This is a full time, salaried position.
