The Connecticut State University American Association of University Professors (CSU-AAUP) represents some 3,000 members at the four regional Connecticut State Universities – Central, Eastern, Southern and Western. CSU-AAUP union members include coaches, counselors, librarians, and professors, who fight together to advance academic freedom, expand access to quality public higher education for students, and improve faculty working conditions.

We are hiring a full-time Organizer, based in Connecticut, who will focus on membership growth and engagement. Under the direction of our lead organizer, they will be responsible for building relationships with members, recruiting new members, identifying new activists and leaders and supporting their development.

Responsibilities:

  • Grow membership in the union:
    • Sign up new members and help design and participate in new member orientations.
    • Track new members and develop their engagement with the union.
  • Build solidarity around the union’s mission and aims:
    • Through one-on-one meetings, committee meetings, worksite visits, phone calls, and chapter meetings.
    • By organizing training sessions on problem solving, advocacy, campaigning, and direct action.
    • By advancing equity within the membership.
  • Mobilize members:
    • Engage members to participate in events, meetings, rallies and other forms of collective action.
    • Work with union leaders to identify, organize, and implement union actions and issue campaigns.
  • Coordinate with organizers of allied unions and community organizations:
    • Work with other unions and community groups in the state to organize campaigns of interest to CSU-AAUP.
    • Support union leaders in building relationships with students, alumni, and the community.
  • Maintain accurate records of organizing work and member engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent familiarity with higher education
  • Demonstrated commitment to CSU-AAUP’s mission, to unionism and to social and economic justice
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with people at all levels in the organization, as well as with allied organizations, including:
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and good listening skills.
    • Ability to respectfully challenge people to take action
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer literacy and ability to use technology, including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as required
  • Willingness to travel to all parts of Connecticut for meetings and to participate in CSU-AAUP related campaigns or events
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car

Preferred:

  • Union organizing experience
  • Experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated success in new organizing campaigns
  • Experience utilizing social media and online tools in organizing

Salary and Benefits:
CSU-AAUP offers paid time off, health, vision and dental insurance, a healthcare savings account, and an employer funded 401(k) retirement plan. Starting salary is in the range of $55,000 – 60,000, depending on relevant experience. This position will be in the staff bargaining unit.
