Financial Strategist
Research Department

Based out of our Solidarity House in Detroit, MI

 

The UAW is raising the standards for workers in a wide variety of industries and is leading ambitious new organizing efforts across the country. In the auto industry, the UAW is leading the charge and dedicating significant resources to supporting non-union autoworkers and battery workers in their organizing efforts. The UAW Research Department is responsible for providing analysis in support of collective bargaining, contract campaigns, public policy initiatives, and organizing new members.

The position of Financial Strategist provides support for the UAW Research Department. The UAW Research Department is responsible for in-depth analyses of companies and industries across the U.S. economy. These analyses are used in bargaining contracts as well as efforts to organize new members. In addition, staff assists in collective bargaining by reviewing financial and labor cost data and using that data to develop and evaluate proposals. The department also researches and evaluates legislative and regulatory issues and policies. This role will act as a liaison with other department staff, UAW staff and affiliates and report to the Director of the Research Department.

Job Description & Key Duties:

  • In-depth, critical analysis and interpretation of corporate financial and economic data in support of activities, including collective bargaining, organizing, education, public relations, and legislative activities of the Union.
  • Function as an integral part of contract negotiations teams with various industries by reviewing financial and labor cost data and utilizing data and gathered intelligence to develop and evaluate bargaining proposals.
  • Develop and evaluate social, economic, and collective bargaining policies of the Union.
  • Provide technical assistance for labor union negotiations, including but not limited to wage analysis, cost estimation, and analysis.
  • Prepare materials for and give presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Assist other UAW departments in developing collective bargaining policies and preparing position papers.
  • Understand, and be able to communicate, the function of the UAW and both the internal and external labor movement.

Job Requirements (Education/Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA certification
  • 5+ years of solid experience in accounting or finance, experience in public accounting, a plus.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and prior research experience in academic, labor, community, or political settings.
  • Ability to perform research that requires finding information that may not be readily available.
  • Ability to present and communicate detailed and complicated information effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Proficient in quantitative analysis and possess strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to work occasional overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Familiarity with the labor movement and its structure is valuable.
  • Possess social justice outlook associated with a progressive labor union.
  • Ability to work well and creatively under tight deadlines in a team environment and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks within a high-pressure environment and meet unpredictable deadlines.
  • Commitment to confidentiality and discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

This is a full-time in-person position located at the UAW Solidarity House, 8000 E. Jefferson, Detroit, Michigan.
