Assistant Director

Union Overview:
This position offers a unique opportunity to represent a diverse membership of health care workers at Kaiser Permanente and City of Hope, and workers in union offices, transit companies and Non-Profits in San Diego, Los Angeles, Arizona, and Denver.

The position of Assistant Director is a salaried position and as such are expected to work the hours required including evenings and weekends. The Assistant Director will enforce contracts, research and file grievances, and is responsible for the administration of all aspects of bargaining contracts, including first contracts and provide servicing to all members at all levels.

Job Description:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending new employee orientations (NEO’s) welcoming new members.
  • Contract negotiations
  • Develop, plan, and execute contract campaigns.
  • Enforce collective bargaining agreements and resolving workplace issues.
  • Grievance handling and arbitrations.
  • Implement year-round member mobilization and communications program.
  • Internal and external organizing.
  • Mediation and dispute resolution skills.
  • Participate in community, political, and other union events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Training and developing member leaders, stewards, bargaining team members, contract action team members, as well as identifying, recruiting, and developing new leaders.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently and be responsible for schedules and assignments as directed by the employer.
  • Must be organized, detailed oriented, and possess excellent time management skills.
  • Requires traveling to worksites throughout San Diego, Los Angeles, Arizona, and Denver.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely reporting of activities.
  • Responsible for maintaining regular contact with stewards and members to provide accurate and timely information to members.
  • Responsible to present the best image of OPEIU Local 30 and support the leadership.
  • Strong experience with contract negotiations.
  • Strong internal and external organizing experience.


  • 3-5 years’ experience representing workers in the labor movement.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in the workload.
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise a high level of judgement.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred.
  • College degree in labor related field, or extensive experience and demonstrated ability in labor relations, labor organizations or related work.
  • Computer skills, ability to use Microsoft Office programs, databases, spreadsheets, and social media.
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with internal and external organizing campaigns.
  • First contract negotiations experience.
  • Strong public speaking skills and experience communicating union messages.
  • Valid driver’s license.
