Joint Council Organizer

Based in Central or Southern Illinois


Teamsters Joint Council No. 25 is a premier Labor Organization in Chicago, Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Joint Council No. 25 represents and protects the rights of over 100,000 hard-working men and women by working in partnership with twenty-five (25) Local Union Affiliates that represent our rank-and-file members in an array of industries.

The Joint Council Organizing Department coordinates the organizing efforts of Local Union Affiliates in the State of Illinois and Northwest Indiana. The department assists Local Union Affiliates in establishing organizing programs, supporting local campaigns, recruiting, and training volunteers.

The Joint Council Organizer implements the Teamsters organizing program in the field; implementation to include, but not limited to, the following factors: probing, prepping, establishing first contact, list building, assessing support, house visiting, committee building, planning, implementing job actions and conducting research. Responsibilities may vary according to the needs of an organizing campaign, Local Affiliate, and/or the department’s priorities. The position of Joint Council Organizer requires travel throughout the geographic regions of the Joint Council. This is not a traditional full-time position with regular working hours. Candidates should have flexibility in their schedules and a willingness to work extended/varying hours, including weekends and holidays.


  • Maintains complete lists and records at all phases of a campaign.
  • Builds community support for campaigns.
  • Assists in filing of election petitions, Unfair Labor Practice charges and negotiations of stipulated election agreements.
  • Runs effective committee meetings.
  • Oversees the assessment of every unit member involved in a campaign.
  • Identifies and recruits leaders.
  • Assists in developing communication strategies for campaigns.
  • Demonstrates effective public speaking, and is comfortable engaging with larger groups of people.


  • Residency in Central or Southern Illinois required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a union environment, political or community organizing preferred
  • At least five months experience of organizing on strategic leverage campaigns preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of union structure, organizing principles, labor movement history, anti-union strategies, and labor law.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Must possess a valid US driver’s license.

The Joint Council offers a generous total compensation package, with a salary range of $65,000 to $75,000 commensurate with experience, comprehensive health coverage including dental and vision, as well as a defined benefit pension plan all provided by the employer with zero employee cost share, optional 401(k) participation, and vacation & sick leave plan.
