Communications Specialist

International Union for Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) is currently hiring in the Washington, DC area for the position of Communications Specialist for the Communications Department.

Since its founding in 1865, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers has actively fought to improve our members’ quality of life – on and off the job – through access to fair wages, good benefits, safe working conditions, and solidarity among members.

Today, we represent the most highly skilled trowel trades craftworkers across the United States and Canada including bricklayers, stone and marble masons, cement masons, plasterers, tile setters, terrazzo and mosaic workers, and pointers/ cleaners/ caulkers. With over a century of protecting the rights of our workers, BAC is the oldest continuous union in North America.

The Position:
The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC) is seeking a talented individual for our communications department, to serve as an intricate part of our staff. Maintain and monitor BAC online presence via Twitter (X), TikTok, Facebook, etc., assist in maintenance of the departments print and digital files. BAC, North America’s longest-serving trade union, is dedicated to organizing masonry craftworkers throughout the United States and Canada for the purpose of improving the lives of our members, their families, and their communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and monitor BAC online presence daily from website to social media (TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube) and assist in developing and implementing BAC’s integrated digital strategies.
  • Write/edit content and create graphics for the organization’s print and digital media, including a quarterly publication (BAC Journal), press releases, e-newsletters, ads, website, texting, and social media.
  • Produce, film, and edit graphic and video content for use on social media.
  • Assist in developing content for BAC-related meetings, design meeting banners and posters, create presentation templates, and assist in taking photos during meetings.
  • Assist in maintenance of the departments prints and digital files in the media library and digital asset manager.
  • Assist local unions with digital media development, as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department Director.

Skills & Core Competencies:

  • Minimum of two to four years of experience in communications, digital media journalism, or related field; or bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced knowledge of digital media based on practical work experience or academic study.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite products, including Photoshop, InDesign, illustrator, and Adobe Premier Pro.
  • Experience in using social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, etc.)
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suites (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Exceptional demonstrated writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Proven ability to work as a team.
  • Ability to travel 10-20% of year.

Useful Skills and Attributes:

  • Knowledge of Google Analytics, email marketing tools (Action Network or similar tools), and or texting (broadcast and peer to peer) is preferred.
  • Ability to speak, comprehend, write, and provide interpretation in Spanish in a variety of situations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in the labor movement or other progressive advocacy organizations is a plus.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time salary position. This position reports to the Communications Director.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $90,000
