Position Description:
The Senior Benefits Assistant assists in the administration of the UFCW Pension Plan by conducting salary audits and finalizing benefit calculations. These key functions constitute a significant portion of the overall responsibilities of this position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Includes the following. Other duties may be assigned. This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.
- Works closely with UFCW International Staff, as well as Local Union and Affiliated Fund staff, to ensure that all eligible salary was reported accurately to U.S. and Canadian Pension Plans.
- Regular telephone and email contact with International and local unions, including individuals in high levels of responsibility, usually to exchange information.
- Responds to questions posed by Plan participants.
- Processing of salary audits and final benefit calculations for the U.S. and Canadian Pension Plans.
- Makes necessary adjustments to participant pension records following final audits.
- Prepares letters regarding final salary audit to Pension Plan participants.
- Updates and maintains individual pension files and other filing related to job responsibilities.
- Maintains employee confidence and protects operations by keeping data strictly confidential.
- Provides back up and support, when needed, to the other Senior Benefit Assistant who processes pension applications.

Education and/or Experience
Three years of related experience in retirement application processing. A working knowledge of the UFCW Pension Plan for Employees, or similar pension plans is required. Experience in auditing financial records is required. Familiarity with ERISA is desired.
Keyboarding Skills
Typing speed: 40 words per minute.
Computer/Software Skills
Ability to use MS Word and Excel to create and properly finalize documents related to duties and responsibilities is required. Ability to accurately maintain databases is required. Ability to navigate through database systems in order to retrieve and verify information is required.
Communication Skills
Experience in reading and interpreting Plan documents, writing routine correspondence, effectively presenting information, and responding to questions from individuals is required.
Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required
- Must be patient and have the desire to serve and work with Plan participants and International and Local Union Staff.
- Must be highly organized and maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive employee and organization information and material.
- Strong analytical and mathematical ability is required.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Job Demands
Work is rapidly paced. Duties are generally diverse, with most duties requiring considerable thought, analysis and reasoning. Extended hours may be necessary to meet job requirements.
Working Conditions
The work is performed in a normal office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Attendance
Attendance will be a determining consideration in all cases where two or more applicants have equal ability, qualifications and/or reliability.
Physical Demands
This position involves, but is not limited to, written and oral communications skills, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and reaching. Reasonable accommodations will be provided pursuant to state and federal laws.
