Public Affairs Director

Based in Wheat Ridge, CO

 

The Public Affairs Director will work collaboratively with senior leadership to develop and implement public affairs and communication strategies to broaden the impact of UFCW Local 7’s mission to support and amplify working people and families. This position will be part of the union’s senior leadership team, reporting to the UFCW Local 7 President, and responsible for developing and implementing, in coordination with the President, strategic public and member relations initiatives.

Capability to work in person and remotely required. Excellent communication skills and tactical understanding of all social media platforms required, as is ability to work in high stress environments, and often long hours.

Primary Job Duties include but not limited to:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Leadership responsibility for creating, developing, and executing all facets of Local 7’s communications, public relations, and marketing and branding activities
  • Leads internal team members and/or interns as needed, as well as vendors, to successfully execute Local 7’s strategies
  • Identifies trends and emerging opportunities that support Local 7’s engagement and external branding with key constituents (i.e., potential members, UFCW International, other union partners, community stakeholders, policymakers, employers, the public at large, etc.)
  • Monitors and reports on state and federal public policy that impacts Local 7’s members and engages with elected officials, policymakers and community stakeholders
  • Represents UFCW Local 7 as needed in public facing events, panels, discussions, as needed and approved by the President
  • Conducts media trainings for both staff and members
  • Measures the effectiveness of communication campaigns to ensure maximum impact
  • Works in tandem with the President, Directors, Organizers, and staff to provide strategic communication plans for Local 7 initiatives

Internal Communications:

  • Creates and executes communications strategies for the organization, communicating internal initiatives, rollouts, and operational announcements with written, visual and video content, including the Local 7 newsletter
  • Assesses, develops, and implements methods to effectively communicate and engage both staff and members
  • Drafts regular Local 7 announcements including promotion/personnel announcements, new initiatives, executive leadership updates, etc.
  • Reviews essential internal documents for quality and consistency with the organization's style and format
  • Leads the planning and execution of quarterly updates, like the Voice of 7 newsletter

External Communications, Public Affairs, Marketing, and Social Media:

  • Ownership and oversight of all Local 7 external communications, including branded collateral
  • Leads reactive public relations efforts, including major news announcements and/or work with outside consultants/resources to secure earned media
  • Develops proactive public relations campaigns for the specific needs of Local 7’s programs and initiatives, including coalition projects
  • Develops and implements a strategic messaging plan to promote the UFCW Local 7 brand to members and the public at large, using mass and print media
  • Works with Organizers to create and deliver external marketing strategy to organize and recruit members for new and existing organizing campaigns
  • Crafts public relations messages to help UFCW Local 7 prepare for and succeed at the bargaining table and to move public policy
  • Oversees social media strategy and ensure messaging comports with strategic media plan, including reviewing and approving posts to promote the UFCW Local 7 story
  • Manages the execution of awards submissions and content for speaking engagements, including speech writing for organizational leadership
  • Oversees the maintenance and updating of the website and other channels, including content updates, prompt response to inquiries, etc.

Branding and Marketing Standards:

  • Manages the branded collateral portfolio including logos, brand guide, templates, presentations, and other materials such as fact sheets and brochures for external use
  • Trains staff on best practices for utilizing branded collateral to promote consistency and advocacy across the organization

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least ten (10) years of media relations experience, labor union or worker advocacy experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading media relations campaigns
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in a communications-related field
  • Ability to work independently, while coordinating with Local 7 staff
  • Extensive media relations contact network along with capability to push stories to media
  • Ensure secrecy of confidential information that may be received

Compensation:

  • $130,000 – $160,000 yearly salary
  • This position is entitled to all benefits as afforded under the staff collective bargaining agreement included, but not limited to, generous paid time off, health insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance and two pensions.
