Lead Gig Organizer

32BJ SEIU represents over 175,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 12 states and Washington, DC. We’re growing fast through organizing campaigns – supporting workers in their effort to form a union, and have a voice in their future.
32BJ is currently seeking a Lead Organizer for the “Gig Campaign.” Today, in Massachusetts, thousands of ridehail app drivers are organizing with 32BJ to win a union and collective bargaining rights, through historic legislation that is currently working its way through the State Legislature. This is a great opportunity for an experienced organizer or campaigner who wants to break new ground.
This position is dependent on campaign funding, and is projected to run for at least a year. It may be extended if funding is renewed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In order to connect with ridehail drivers where they work, Gig Organizers and their Lead must have strong online skills and solid organizing experience. They engage workers through digital, phone, and in-person contact. The Lead Gig Organizer does the work of a Gig Organizer, conducting broad and intensive worker outreach, digitally and in-person. In addition, responsibilities include:
- With campaign team, develops and executes digital organizing strategy that encompasses both online and offline organizing tactics (including apps, building virtual communities, digital ads, mass email and texting, social media, distributed organizing) to meet campaign goals;
- Leads the work of organizers, including one with expertise in digital outreach;
- Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts to non-union drivers online, in apps and in person; building one-on-one relationships with workers leading groups;
- Conducting individual and group meetings online or in person with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns;
- Identifying and developing leaders, who can educate and motivate other drivers to take action;
- Originate and implement digital outreach to individual workers and groups of workers to take collective public action;
- Engaging workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to bear on the industry as a whole;
- Working to involve community groups and allies in organizing campaigns;
- Designs, writes, and manages mass email campaigns, social media and print graphics, digital engagement forms and online actions, mass text message communications, and basic HTML website editing. Coordinates with the Communications department for consistency in organizational messaging.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes.
- At least two years of worker organizing experience, including supervising other staff
- Professional experience in digital organizing, copywriting, digital media or marketing, or comparable experience
- Experience building successful digital engagement programs, including growing and sustaining healthy online communities
- High level of proficiency with digital engagement media channels, including:
- P2P text platforms, email marketing, Blast text platforms
- Ability to design content using Adobe, Canva, or other design tools
- Familiarity with WordPress, familiarity with Facebook business pages and groups
- Familiarity with Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, WhatsApp, We Chat and Twitter, including stories features
- Basic video editing skills, experience using design software and ability to quickly produce high-quality, on-brand social media graphics and designs
- The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds; fluency in a second language, Spanish preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- This position is full time, and occasionally requires long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
- While based in our Boston office, the position requires travel within the state, and occasionally to NY HQ.
- Participation in public actions is required.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary for this role is $94,170. 32BJ provides a benefits package that includes employer-paid medical, dental and vision plans, for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. We offer retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. The Union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
