Campaign Communications Specialist

Based in Portland, OR

 

The Oregon AFL-CIO is the statewide federation of labor unions, representing over 300,000 working people across our state. We operate the largest independent voter contact program in Oregon and are hiring a Campaign Communications Specialist to join our team and help us deliver information about Oregon Labor endorsed candidates to voters across the state. We’re looking for candidates with campaign experience and exemplary communications skills who are passionate about advocating for working people.

As the Campaign Communications Specialist, you will help plan and execute a cutting-edge digital campaign including social media content development and planning, advertising campaigns, internal and external communications about events, and supporting volunteer recruitment efforts. In addition to our digital work, we operate a statewide direct mail program which the Campaign Communications Specialist will also directly support. The Oregon AFL-CIO is a multifaceted labor organization and you will be required to assist with other program areas as needed in addition to our political campaign efforts.

Schedule, Compensation & Location

  • This is a full-time temporary position, beginning in early March 2024 and ending in November 2024.
  • Compensation is $4,000 - $5,000 per month. Generous health, welfare and retirement benefits are included.
  • The Campaign Communications Specialist will work at the Oregon AFL-CIO’s offices in SE Portland three days per week and two days at home. Required in person days are Monday and Thursday, with the third day of your choice (weekend and evenings as assigned).
  • The Campaign Communications Specialist will be expected to attend and participate in voter outreach canvasses on weekends as well as fulfilling up to two phone banking shifts on weekday evenings from home, with additional voter outreach shifts expected during the final week of both the primary and general elections.

Responsibilities & Duties
The Campaign Communications Specialist will report directly to the Communications Director and provide direct support to both the communications and political field programs. Duties include but are not limited to:

Social Media Content Creation and Management

  • Develop and implement a detailed plan to educate voters about Oregon AFL-CIO priority candidates, ballot measures, and issues using social media
  • Create daily content for Facebook, X/Twitter and Instagram
  • Track social media audience growth/analytics and prepare monthly reports
  • Assist with Facebook Ads, Google Ads, and geofencing campaigns effectively to help grow our audience and educate voters simultaneously

Volunteer Recruitment & Events

  • Assist political field staff with the recruitment and retention of volunteers, including maintaining a detailed calendar of field events and a sophisticated volunteer sign up form
  • Develop flyers, emails, social media posts and graphics to entice volunteers to attend campaign events
  • Take photos and videos at campaign events to use in recruitment and promotional materials

Direct Mail Program

  • Support the Communications Director in the development and design of a wide range of political mailings including postcards, slate cards, and traditional letters
  • Assist with physically moving printed mailers from printers to mail distribution services

General Communications Duties

  • Assist with Oregon AFL-CIO communications priorities as needed including social media, digital media, earned media
  • Drafting emails, letters and official correspondence
  • Editing and proofreading communications
  • Other duties as assigned by the Communications Director to support the priorities of the Oregon AFL-CIO and its affiliated unions.

Qualifications

  • Experience working on a political or advocacy campaign or comparable professional experience in fast-paced, goal-oriented environment
  • Excellent writing, editing and interpersonal communications skills
  • Experience using major social media platforms in a professional or campaign setting
  • Graphic design experience and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and Canva
  • Competency in Google Drive programs, Microsoft Office and other standard office computer programs
  • Experience with Constituent Relationship Management systems such as Action Network
  • Experience with Squarespace and Wix or comparable website platforms
  • Familiarity with the labor movement, movements for progressive social change and political or issue campaigns
  • Creative ideas for mobilizing and educating union members on political topics
  • A valid drivers’ license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently in a fast-moving campaign environment
